Jee Hoon Stark
Gallery SP is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Jee Hoon Stark < LUMI KUKE, salt to taste > from April 21 to May 28, 2022. This exhibition is Stark’s solo exhibition held at Gallery SP for the first time in two years since 2020. Visitors will be able to see the artist’s new series, LUMI KUKE.
Born in Korea, Jee Hoon Stark moved to the United States as a child and majored in architecture at Iowa State University. His paintings are based on architectural sketches and during the artist’s travel to various cities worldwide.
The landscapes that people pass daily are reconstructed into Stark’s childlike pure gaze and an architect’s point of view. On top of the multilayered color background, architectural graphics and artists’ handwritten words grasp the viewers’ eyes.
As an architect and as a painter, Stark began with a curiosity about the concept of “kitchen painting.” the previous series introduced in 2020 was called “Toy City.” This series dealt with the larger “city-scale” and was based on Stark’s unique interpretation of imitating large cities that he traveled onto a canvas. The recent 2022 series, “LUMI KUKE,” means “kitchen” in the Hawaiian language. In terms of “human scale,” the artists chose the kitchen, the most used room in the house. It is a room with human interactions and is where many of the memories are made.
The artist explored in human scale, whether that is visual, taste, sensory, or spatial form, to convey the “kitchen” subject on a canvas. One of the critical processes was using the artist’s own kitchen space for cooking endeavors. It led to his fascination with mixing ingredients like mixing paints. These metaphorical ingredients and experiences in the kitchen finalized Stark’s process and visual layers for the “kitchen painting” series called “LUMI KUKE.”
“My encouragement is like endlessly updating recipes. For viewers, you may salt to your taste.” -Jee Hoon Stark 2022
