Sensing Existence

Taehoo Jung, Geunyoung Hong, Smeya

《Sensing Existence》 Poster

Gallery FM is pleased to present a group exhibition 《Sensing Existence》 by Jung Taehoo, Hong Geunyoung and Smeya, on view from July 25 to August 16, 2025.

This exhibition invites viewers to reflect on the subtle moments in which we sense our own existence. We see light, feel warmth, and experience emotions stirring deep within. All of these sensations are possible because we exist. Sensing Existence begins with this quiet awareness, and explores how the traces of existence emerge through perception.

Jung Taehoo, Hong Geunyoung, and SMEYA each translate emotional fragments, memories, anxiety, recovery, relationships, and time into visual languages unique to their practice. Their works go beyond depiction or representation—they are visual inquiries into the moments in which existence reveals itself through sensation, interwoven with the languages of the personal and the symbolic, the bodily and the temporal.

Jung Taehoo (b. 1991) expresses the awe, joy, and sublimity that arise in the very moment of recognizing oneself as a living being. For Jung, the body is most vividly sensed in moments of intensity—when breath quickens, heartbeats thunder in the ears, or when confronted with the force of the wind or the fleeting motion of a bird’s wings. These moments, when one is sharply aware of being alive, are rendered in energetic brushwork and dynamic compositions. In this exhibition, Jung presents works that focus on the vitality of human and natural movement, capturing the fleeting emotions and life force that arise in everyday moments.

Hong Geunyoung (b. 1984) visualizes the traces of anxiety and emotion that emerge from the conditions of life, translating them onto the physical surface of ceramics. Cracked and distorted fragments are joined together, not only restoring what was broken but also creating an act of emotional sharing. Her work questions what we rely on in an uncertain world, and highlights the process of belief through symbolic images in clay. Drawing inspiration from mythical creatures in traditional folktales and internet culture, she constructs emotionally layered landscapes where memory, identity, and feeling intertwine. Her hand-sculpted figures, though rooted in personal experience, serve as vessels for shared emotion and the possibility of empathy and connection.

SMEYA (b. 1983) explores how emotions endure through nature, symbolism, and the passage of time. Traditional motifs such as the Sipjangsaeng and the twelve zodiac animals suggest that human desires and emotional yearnings persist across generations. SMEYA’s works capture subtle emotional tremors in quiet landscapes, conveyed without explanation through the language of perception. Images collected from nature, abstracted animal forms, and faded traces of memory coalesce into emotional topographies that reflect both the personal and the historical. Rather than telling a single story, her paintings offer spaces where emotion gently settles—spaces viewers pass through, where unexpected resonances may arise from their own memories.

Sensing Existence is a collective attempt by the three artists to perceive existence through time, memory, symbolism, and emotion. Sensation is not merely a physical response but a way of understanding and affirming being. This exhibition presents subtle yet vivid evidence of existence—and hopes to offer visitors a quiet opportunity to sense their own presence once again.
