Blindmand’s Bluff, 2025, 97×193.9cm, Giclée on Canvas with Mixed Media
‘Non Finito’ refers to a state in which an artwork is intentionally left unfinished—not as a mere lack of completion, but as a conceptual approach that incorporates the creative process itself into the final work. By leaving certain forms unrefined, the artist imbues the work with a raw tension and a heightened sculptural potential. The solo exhibition Non Finito by Choi Hana, held at Gallery We Suji, explores the boundaries between completion and incompletion, the tension between comfort and discomfort, transforming these dualities into artistic energy through an experimental lens.

Choi Hana is deeply engaged with philosophy. She believes that all emotions and inquiries experienced in life, as well as the process of contemplation itself, constitute the essence of philosophy. Through this conviction, she distills profound insights into existence and the world into singular, compelling visual narratives. A blindfolded, futile gesture conveys the abyss of illusion and self-deception, while a Last Supper of fallen angels and sinners poses questions about the paradox of divinity. Her striking combinations of deep blues, neutrals, teals, and pinks heighten the surreal atmosphere, while the interplay between reality and the unreal fosters both an unsettling emotional dissonance and an immersive sense of reverie.

Her artistic process begins with digital drawing—a crucial part of her artistic exploration. This contemporary medium enables a surrealist approach that seamlessly bridges the conscious and unconscious realms, unconstrained by physical limitations. It grants her the flexibility to capture spontaneous shifts in her inner world with immediacy and precision. For Choi, whose practice is deeply rooted in philosophical inquiry, the act of drawing itself becomes a visualized meditation. Her works are printed using Giclée, a technique known for its exceptional archival quality, and are then finished with oil and acrylic, enhancing their depth and texture while creating a dynamic interplay of light and shadow.
Epicurus_ Paradox, 2024, 97×145.5cm, Giclée on Canvas with Mixed Media
Choi Hana’s captivating canvases invite viewers into a deep exploration of emotions and self-reflection. As she states, “The world of consciousness offers comfort, but to remain within it is to stagnate. The unconscious is chaotic, yet it holds the essence of creative energy. Since we cannot exist solely in one or the other, we must constantly seek balance between the two.” This perpetual artistic tension—between conflicting emotions, ambiguous realities, and layered narratives—is the very essence and allure of her work. Non Finito stands as both an artistic and philosophical confession, an open-ended dialogue on transformation and evolution. Viewers are invited to witness and partake in the unfolding journey of this ever-evolving young artist.
