Fragments of Fantasy: New Perspectives in Landscape

Yujin KANG

Yujin KANG Solo Show_3F Installation

We are pleased to present Kang Yujin’s solo exhibition “Fragments of Fantasy: A New Perspective on Landscape” at Sun Gallery. Kang Yujin developed her unique artistic vision through a comprehensive education, graduating from Seoul Arts High School and Seoul National University’s Department of Western Painting (both undergraduate and graduate), followed by advanced studies at Goldsmiths, University of London. Through her participation in various residency programs, including those in Berlin and at the Utah Museum, she has continuously worked on combining and juxtaposing the unique topographies and cultures of each region with objects commonly encountered in daily life. This exhibition showcases new works based on her experiences and inspirations gained from participating in the Oak Spring Garden residency program in Virginia, USA last year.

Kang Yujin reconstructs her experiences and memories in an original way to create new landscapes. Her works freely traverse the boundaries between artificial and natural, abstract and figurative, real and unreal, providing viewers with a multi-layered visual experience. Her unique technique, which utilizes the material properties of enamel paint, creates canvases where chance and intention harmoniously blend. Through this, she reinterprets various subjects such as gardens, sculptures, and swimming pools from a new perspective, allowing us to perceive familiar landscapes in novel ways.

This exhibition is particularly intriguing as it features sculptures that inspired the artist during her visits to the Glenstone Museum and St. Bride’s Farm, now reimagined on her canvas. Viewers can see how three-dimensional works by world-renowned sculptors such as Jeff Koons, Richard Serra, George Rickey, and Bernar Venet are reinterpreted and expressed on Kang Yujin’s two-dimensional plane. It’s also worth noting the visual effects created when the solidity of sculpture meets the flexibility of enamel material.

Art critic Ahn So-yeon has stated, “Kang Yujin creates cracks in vast landscapes, seeking painterly pretexts to approach fragments of fantasy – a primordial place akin to darkness that can be imagined in those crevices.” As such, this exhibition offers a valuable opportunity to appreciate Kang Yujin’s evolved perspective and expressive methods. Through this exhibition, viewers will be able to explore the various layers and meanings contained in her works, discovering a new perspective on landscape.
