ATELIER AKI will host this new year’s first exhibition VANGUARD from February 16 to March 30, featuring promising young contemporary artists Kim Sungkook, Kim Sijong, Kim Yongoh, Jeong Inhye, Chung Sooyoung, and Lim Hyunjung and artist duo John Cook(Kim Sungkook & Kim Sijong). Our first special exhibition VANGUARD presents 20 new and representative works of artists with experimental attitudes and imagination who are establishing a bold presence in Korean contemporary art.
Kim Sungkook(b. 1982) seamlessly arranges familiar and unfamiliar concepts to live in coexistence, thus reconstructing mythical and personal scenery in his own unique way. Kim Sijong(b. 1983) utilizes the digital collage method to express flat paintings as photos and uses the camera to create his own realistic virtual world. In addition, John Cook, composed of two artists, Kim Sungkook and Kim Sijong a painter and a photographer respectively, will also be presenting prominent works from paintings recreated as collaged photo images to digitally converted original paintings.
Kim Yongoh(b. 1986), has established an unrivaled position in the NFT market, and reinterprets stories and characters in real life through experimentation with various colors and lines. US-based artist Lim Hyunjung (b. 1987), who majored in Western painting at Seoul National University, and graduated with a masters at Central Saint Martins in the UK, captures a world of fantasy and surrealism grounded in reality. After graduating from the Royal College of Art master’s degree, Chung Sooyoung(b. 1987), a British-based artist drawing attention in both the domestic and international art circles, showcases her unique screen composition based on the relationship between various objects. Last but not least, Jeong Inhye(b. 1990) uses a cactus existing between boundaries of realism or expressionism as the motif of her work to fill the screen with subjective colors and rough brush touches.
ATELIER AKI looks forward to greeting everyone this warm spring to an artistic world created by Korea’s most prominent young contemporary artists.
