Layered Painting : Almost Blue

Seungtaik Jang

Layered Painting 40-22, 2024, Acrylic on canvas, 100x80cm

Hakgojae Gallery will hold an exhibition titled 《Layered Painting: Almost Blue》 a solo show by Seungtaik Jang(b. 1959, Goyang), from Tuesday, April 15 to Saturday, May 17. This exhibition features about 20 blue-themed paintings. The “Layered Painting” series continues the conceptual exploration of the artist’s previous “Poly Painting” series. These works are examples of color field painting that push beyond the limits of primary colors to express a diverse and nuanced color spectrum.
Using large brushes, the artist repeatedly applies transparent layers of acrylic paint mixed with special mediums in various colors. This process of layering and drying is repeated dozens of times to construct each painting. While expanding the traditional concept of color field painting, the minimal brushstrokes and their traces add spatial depth to the canvas. Here, color serves not just as a visual element, but as a core factor that defines the materiality and essence of the artwork.
This exhibition invites viewers to experience more than just the color blue. It offers an opportunity to perceive the depth and subtle variations embedded within the layers of blue. Through the interplay of light and color, the exhibition explores the depth created by multi-layered hues and reveals new possibilities for color field painting.
