Kim Seong Cheol
Gana Art presents Breathing in a Circle, a solo exhibition of Kim Seong Cheol(b. 1980) who reinterprets traditional horong (oil lamp) through lamp-lit installations, showcasing delicate and smooth forms made with white porcelain. All his works are handmade, and he creates refined ceramics by joining two hemispherical halves molded on the wheel. This is a distinctive process also applied for traditional moon jar and the artist shows his exquisite wheel-molding technique even with his thin horong lid.
Horong, once a functional object, has lost its utilitarian purpose and has now become a decorative item. Nevertheless, the artist imbues emotional significance to horong and concentrates on the memories that such objects evoke as they illuminated our living spaces for a long time. Kim Seong Cheol’s artistic expression is marked by the dominance of unadorned shapes and gentle contours, evoking images of serene landscapes such as a dimly illuminated forest or the ethereal sight of stars suspended above the horizon. Many of his recent works, which feature variations on these standardized forms, are motifs that stimulate the artist’s fantastical imagination and refer to various genres such as pop culture and architecture. Through the materialization of the artist’s personal feelings combined with the technical skills of ceramics, the exhibition aims to reveal the developmental direction of Korean ceramic art. The exhibition will offer an opportunity to appreciate the aesthetics of Kim’s works and the illusion of light he creates.
