Art Works Paris Seoul Gallery is pleased to present the France-based Korean artist Kyung-Ae Hur’s solo exhibition from July 1 to 30, 2022. Represented by the gallery in Asia, Hur has been recognized by the Korean and international artworld for her unique technique which involves the process of compiling and scratching into myriad layers of multicolored paint, which is first applied by painting or spraying onto the canvas. The upcoming exhibition will showcase a range of works—from those that demonstrate the artist’s signature method integrating meticulous construction and deconstruction, to new paintings that feature collages of cut out pieces of canvas—dubbed by the artist herself as an ‘eye-opening’ selection that exemplifies her practice.

Hur’s artistic vocabulary encompasses more than the simple, repeated act of constructing and deconstructing layers of paint. Her creative process, which reveals a different hue of pigment underneath the overlying layer by scraping into a dense, kaleidoscopic surface of paint, resembles the artist’s desire to explore the essence of this candid physical act, visually translated into colorful compositions that adopt a range of forms depending on the angle.

While Kyung-Ae Hur’s works initially mesmerize viewers with their splendid yet vivid blend of color, her paintings evoke a strong sense of energy when observed up-close. Once the surface layer of the canvas is made ready after the application and drying of numerous coatings of paint, Hur then scrapes into the plane—an act that accompanies extensive physical strain. The entirety of this process is carried out in Hur’s atelier in Evreux, a region in France located an hour away from Paris. Having studied printmaking, Hur utilizes her expertise in the field to realize specific compositions onto the canvas. Meanwhile, coincidence is another pillar of Hur’s visual vocabulary. With unexpected compositions inevitable despite the artist’s scrupulous attitude towards painting, Hur’s creative process can be defined as a blend of coincidence and control; the artist stated that this combination of the logical and the illogical brings her delight. More recently, the artist has been focused on the ‘construction’ of a new image, mainly by gathering and collaging remnants of paint from her deconstruction process, and by rearranging canvas strips.

Born in 1977 in Gwangju, Korea, Kyung-Ae Hur studied Painting and Printmaking at Chonnam National University and Sungshin Women’s University, before relocating to France, where she studied Fine Arts at École Nationale Supérieure d’Art de Paris-Cersgy and University Paris 1, Panthéon-Sorbonne. Having since worked across France, Europe, and Asia for the past two decades, Hur has gained international recognition as Korea’s next-generation woman artist. Since 2013, Hur has held several solo exhibitions with Art Works Paris Seoul Gallery. The opening reception for the show is scheduled for July 15 (Fri.), 2022, at the gallery, located in 3F, Bukchon-ro 4-gil 16, Jongno-gu, Seoul, Korea.
