5 years after the first solo show in Seoul after returning from England, 《From Water to Land》, Zin-Hee Park’s solo exhibition is held at K.O.N.G gallery in the same city. The works for this exhibition are comprised mainly of the results at the Kim Tschang-Yeul Art Museum in Jeju during the 15 months of stay on the island. After the artist returned to the mainland, he added oil paintings newly produced.

The Wolryeong-ri’s cactus is said to have been a pear cactus from the Aztecs in Mexico, which was washed up on the Kuroshio current 200 years ago. While working, I imagined a cactus that would have had an extreme experience drifting aimlessly across the black sea relying on the moonlight in the form of fragments such as fruits and stems. In addition to Wolryeong-ri in North Jeju, I toured the small islands near Jeju where pear cactuses are distributed, such as Biyang, Gapa, and Mara. I brought to the canvas those creatures that were re-born after being interfaced with the black ocean current.

Sometimes I tried to represent its bumpy texture using a palette knife and express dynamic saltatory movements of high and low tide through brushstrokes. The cactus with the flower language of ‘burning heart’, photosynthesizes while controlling its breath when the orange sunset submerged into the blue sea of Jeju Island. The heat of the cactus inherent in that way gently exudes the heat of breathing as if it were ignited in the painting.
