Overwhelming Walls and a Burning Car

Chae Jimin

Exhibition Poster

Gallery Joeun is pleased to present Chae Ji-Min’s solo exhibition, Overwhelming Walls and a Burning Car, running from May 29 to June 21, 2025. This exhibition spotlights the artist’s distinctive visual language, shaped through a sustained exploration of the boundaries between reality and illusion, flatness and dimensionality, within the medium of painting.
Chae Ji-Min’s works present juxtaposed structures, figures, and objects without a coherent narrative, generating a visually tense spatiotemporal realm. His paintings create dissonance within familiar scenes, inviting viewers to experience the fissures between perception and sensation—transcending mere representation.

The exhibition will unveil 20 new paintings, which mark a pivotal moment in the artist’s ongoing inquiry. These fragmented yet arresting images capture moments of stillness, as if suspended at the edge of a scene, prompting contemplation of painting’s essence and its limits.

“His journey begins beneath an overwhelming wall”

Chae Ji-Min states, “My paintings are a random combination of fragmented images discovered in moments of life.” The elements within his paintings—each from different contexts—collide or coexist in ambiguous relationships without full resolution. His practice is less concerned with narrative than with evoking sensory experiences and emotional resonance.
Chae’s distinctive visual language continues to extend globally with quiet intensity. Following the presentation of his installation Overwhelming Crash at Hermès Maison Shanghai in 2023, he is currently participating in a project with Hermès Singapore. His works, marked by their experimental nature and structural tension, communicate through images rather than words, leaving a lasting impression.

Art critic Joo Eun-Jung describes Chae’s artistic world as follows:
“He devises and participates in a bold game—attempting to meticulously construct a space that is isolated from neither reality nor image, yet never fully formed within either. It is a game with no definitive answer or solution. Within this open-ended structure, where conclusions are endlessly deferred, he finds creative freedom, using the constraints as motivation. His journey begins beneath an overwhelming wall.”
