Based in Fukushima, Japan, Koizumi Ryo incorporates Eastern philosophy into his work, exploring themes of nature, Zen, mandalas, and cyclicality. His abstract paintings merge philosophical contemplation with personal identity, offering a unique blend of traditional Eastern aesthetics and contemporary artistic expression.

This exhibition features Koizumi’s representative “Halo” series, which visualizes his meditative process of self-confrontation through the repetitive act of drawing circular forms. The recurring circular patterns painted over thick layers of oil paint symbolize infinity and cyclicality, providing viewers with a sense of reverence and immersion.

Koizumi explores the profound emotional resonance between light, painting, and the observer. Through the structured repetition of layered pigments and the element of chance, his works evoke the presence of light on the canvas. As suggested by the title “Halo,” his paintings capture the mysterious movement of light, inviting viewers to experience infinite order and wonder.

Koizumi’s work is influenced by Enso (圓相), the circular expression of Zen philosophy. The circle (圓) has long been regarded as a symbol of perfection and infinity, and through this form, the artist captures moments of time and light, offering modern audiences a new visual and sensory experience.
