Lotta, Ayano Nakano
Ayano Nakano, better known as Lotta, is a self-taught painter based in Tokyo, Japan.
Lotta has been strongly influenced by Western cartoons and Japanese animations. Her works are mostly monochrome with curves and flowy lines, which gives the characters and still lifes a lively movement.
These characteristics of her work allow the viewers to imagine the plot vividly and feel the sound effects of motion.
Lotta made a name for herself through collaborations with her unique character, Socks the Ghost Cat. Socks, the mysterious ghost cat who travels freely between novels, dreams, and memories of living things, was born from Lotta’s doodles and has now become a significant figure in her works, embodying the character-driven narrative.
The creatures Socks has met, the sceneries he has seen, and the events experienced through the mysterious power he possesses, dive, can also be found in the collections of her works.
In the exhibition Light Your Soul, Lotta creates Meltverse, a fictional world inspired by candlelight where all creatures are destined to melt someday.
The exhibition introduces new characters, a boy with a slightly sad look in his eyes, a contentedly smiling boy, a bored-looking elf, and a spaced-out dog and their encounter with Socks.
Socks’s aesthetic experience in Meltverse projects our lives through Lotta’s narrative in a nostalgic mood.
“The candlelight gently illuminates, which gives us a sense of hope and security, while the sight of the melted candle after the fire runs out sometimes makes us feel fragile and sad. I, too, burn with life and live in the present. And as long as I have this light, I want to paint a work that illuminates someone’s soul.”
