有無相生

Jahyun Seo, Kyunglim Lee

有無相生, 2023, Installation View, Seoul

Jahyun Seo and Kyunglim Lee are two female artists in their mid-50s who met in Korea through the Art Mission Christian art collective and have been working together in New York since 2016. The paintings in the exhibition are a projection of their lives in time and space. Seo is currently working on extending the discourse of perceptual experimentation and fusion work to the medium of NFTs, and in 2022, she presented her media work as a solo booth at Kiaf Plus Seoul, which showcases media art. Her series on the theme of ‘Seeing and Being Seen’ is presented annually with superimposed images through her Christian worldview. Lee studied oriental painting at Seoul National University in South Korea and is currently based in New York City. She has participated in numerous solo exhibitions and over 100 group exhibitions, and her sculptures and installations use cardboard as their primary material. Using corrugated cardboard as a special material, she makes the most of its variability and instability to create various forms and meanings.

有無相生, 2023, Installation View, Seoul

Seo and Lee’s “有無相生,” on view from November 18 to December 15, 2023 at Seo Gallery, focuses on works by female artists in their 50s, emphasizing their identities and relationships. Living multifaceted lives as mothers, sisters, and daughters, they understand the coexistence of beauty and pain in real life and express it with a unique perspective. Although their works may seem different at first glance in terms of content and form, in their time together, they provide comfort to each other and show through their paintings the afterimages of things that disappear with time. As Asian women artists who have migrated abroad continue their stories online and offline despite the geographical gap and time difference between Seoul and New York, and as they are connected by their common experiences in midlife and as artists, Jahyun Seo and Kyunglim Lee use art as a medium to find common ground in continuing their art despite the many challenges they have faced in their lives as women artists.
