Hiroshi Sugito

Hiroshi Sugito(1970-), a representative painter of Japanese art since the 1990s, reevaluates non-visual objects such as dreams, ideals, and memories into sophisticated lines and geometrical abstract images. By accepting the feature of Japanese traditional painting with the beauty in empty space, the artist structurally arranges images to construct the surface of the canvas. Sugito especially represents the depth of memory by placing a frame around the existing frame, such as drawing a curtain or a grid to create another space within the canvas. ≪apples and triangles≫ is not only Sugito’s first solo exhibition in Korea, but also a meaningful opportunity to experience his works in Korea in 7 years since 2013, and 20 of his new works that were produced specifically for this exhibition can be appreciated at both Gana Art Nineone and Gana Art Sounds.

Hiroshi Sugito
Hiroshi Sugito(1970-) graduated from the Department of Japanese Painting, Faculty of Arts, Aichi Prefectural College of Arts in 1992 and he is currently Associate Professor of the Department of Painting, Faculty of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts. Sugito, who is a representative painter of Japanese art since the 1990s followed by Nara Yoshitomo(1959-) and Takashi Murakami(1962-), is considered to be one of the most representative artists in the art trend called Tokyo-POP, which was located in Japanese art field from the 1990s to the early 2000s. Sugito reevaluates non-visual objects such as dreams, ideals, and memories into sophisticated lines and geometrical abstract images. By accepting the feature of Japanese traditional painting with the beauty in empty space, the artist structurally arranges images to construct the surface of the canvas. Sugito especially represents the depth of memory by placing a frame around the existing frame, such as drawing a curtain or a grid to create another space within the canvas. Old frames from the 1950s and 1960s were used as an important material to create a new space in his work, and he believes these frames consist of a special beauty as much as the time they have passed. In addition, Sugito does not limit the space to the frame of canvas, but he expands the space to the entire exhibition hall. Therefore, by painting or selecting a new work considering different characteristics of the space, he reinterprets the entire space itself into a piece of artwork. Sugito has been exploring the realization of life experiences and memories through abstract and concrete motifs paintings since the beginning of his work, and he has been constructing his own art by continuously adding the concept of space through expanding the area of work without limiting it to the canvas.
