LEE EU
Art Works Paris Seoul Gallery is pleased to present LEE EU’s solo exhibition from August 19 to September 30, 2022. Lee, who’s artistic endeavor involves finding harmony with the essence of materiality, has established an oeuvre beginning with her Paysage-Matiere works—first revealed in Paris—and further progressing into the Geste and Peinture en question series. Experimental materials used in Lee’s work exhibit traces of the artist’s actions, as well as sculpt their own form by dynamically inhabiting the surface of the canvas. Lee often employs ‘All-over painting’ to maintain control over her composition, while gradually allowing external factors such as the subconscious, gravity, and space, to expand her dialogue with the art. Lee’s three series—which share ‘matiere’ in common—examine the way a line exists on a plane.
Lee has most recently been immersed in her Peinture en question series, which name was inspired by the title of Supports/Surfaces’ first exhibition. Active throughout the 1960-70s in Southern France, Supports/Surfaces was a minimalist avant-garde movement that reacted against the abundance of Catholic painting in Paris, and on the contrary strived to unearth the new potentials of painting by deconstructing it and highlighting its materiality. The Peinture en question series focuses on the relationship between and materiality of the canvas and the pigment. The excess of pigment(matière), which extends outside the canvas, elevates the canvas to an independent structure of itself (as to how it previously existed as a supporting frame of the image), proposing a ‘question for painting’ with an unconventional situation that brings together the canvas and the pigment to form a medium for painting. By reducing the artist’s interference—to the level of simply allowing gravity to shape the work or applying minimal brushstrokes—Lee also provides viewers with the opportunity to contemplate upon the meticulous process of painting.
Born in 1976 in Korea, LEE EU has lived and worked in Paris, France, since 2007. Lee’s exploration of the ‘material as a matière’—initially developed during her time studying Painting at Hongik University—has earned the contemporary artist an international reputation. Lee, who received her masters degree at the École des Arts Décoratifs de Strasbourg, further completing a residency at Cité Internationale des Arts and Daegue Art Factory, is currently in Artist-in-Residence at the Pium Residence. Lee continues to expand her study into the relationship of the material and the surface. Meanwhile, Lee’s upcoming exhibition presents new works from her Peinture en question series. The opening reception will be held on August 19 (Fri.), 2022, at Art Works Paris Seoul Gallery, located in 3F, 16, Bukchon-ro 4-gil, Jongno-gu, Seoul, Korea.
