Minha YangㅣClosed-loop life system 2409

Who are you as an individual and artist?

I am an educator and artist who specializes in computational media. My work explores the hybridization of art and science, the vitality of machinery, co-evolution, algorithms, and artificial intelligence. I envision entities that exist and evolve autonomously. I have been invited to exhibit at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, the Creators Project, and ELEKTRA and FILE since 2002, among other venues.

What artworks are you showcasing in this exhibition?

Closed-loop life system 2409 is a piece that transforms the birth and demise of artificial life forms into visual representations. By flickering light beads inside the object, I aim to elucidate the simple yet profound rules of life, including birth, mortality, reproduction, and decline. This work reveals the infinitely recursive activities of life within a “closed environment,” illustrating the self-originating and self-terminating traces of life that lack a discernible end.

What message or experience do you aim to convey through your exhibition piece?

The seamless integration of extremely advanced technology into our daily existence renders it difficult to perceive. Artificial intelligence is an example of this. As these dramatic technological advancements accelerate, we might envision a scenario in which AI autonomously generates its nature and existence. In my work, I aspire to investigate how humans will perceive the life and nature that machines have created at the juncture, and whether it will be utterly negative and frightful. I intend to commence this dialogue through my work.

What makes your artwork unique?

My work serves as an illustration of the buffer zone that exists between the ideals of science and technology and the realities of human life. This concept is articulated through the active integration of technology into my art. There are as many values and perspectives in art as there are creators and appreciators. I aspire for my works to function as autonomous pieces of art that embody science and technology and thrive independently.
