Bosul Kim ㅣ Hyper Connection: Embrace

 

Who are you as an individual and artist?

I am Bosul Kim, a media artist. I create works that examine the organic interconnectedness between humans, nature, and living organisms from an Oriental perspective, utilizing modern technologies such as AI, AR, and VR. By doing so, I intend to reflect on the distinctive origins of future humans, investigate the potential of art, and amplify perception and sensation. I am also working as a professor of Digital Art at Seoul Institute of the Arts, where I conduct various experiments and research.

 

What artworks are you showcasing in this exhibition?

Hyper Connection: Embrace is an immersive VR artwork depicting a world submerged in water as a result of the climate crisis. One could interpret it as a virtual ecosystem of the future, where humanity and nature are inseparably intertwined. This concept aligns with an Eastern perspective that respects the intrinsic value of life. To enhance immersion in this worldview, I have incorporated various technologies, including artificial intelligence, game engines, and motion capture. The interaction between humanity and nature prompts viewers to reevaluate the experience of this artwork.

 

What message or experience do you aim to convey through your exhibition piece?

I aspire for audiences to encounter novel stimuli as they become fully engaged with the artwork. In this piece, they have the opportunity to investigate a variety of hybrid life forms that may emerge as a result of the climate crisis and environmental changes in surreal scenarios. VR enables viewers to navigate a virtual environment, thereby broadening their multidimensional senses and acquiring insights into novel forms of communication and connection.

What makes your artwork unique?

I always strive to integrate Eastern philosophy with contemporary technological media, thereby highlighting the holistic relationship between humans and nature and infusing my work with Eastern emotional undertones. I hope to provide audiences with the opportunity to understand and experience a diverse perspective through an immersive experience.
