Hur Boree
Since ancient times, flowers were closely related to human life, attracting the attention of many fans and observers, and given infinite life in various forms as the muse of many artists.
The exhibition includes the newest works of Hur Boree during her one-year sojourn in Jeju Island, where she lived with and observed flowers, swaying with them from the wind, and immersing herself in the scents of the flowers. Her works are created from the flowing speed of strokes and light touches.
From Hur’s perspective, flowers are humans. Hur’s flowers depict her family and herself. We can see a grandmother from withering flowers, a fragrant woman from herbs, and mothers from the grand and fancy flowers. Of course, from the tranquil and frail, but very strong flowers, we can see Hur herself. The names of the works, , , , and … all remind us of portraits of people we have seen from somewhere. She painted flowers as the people we see in our everyday lives.
Her paintings portray the shaky moments of life, the day when she felt the glances of the plants, the harmony that the plants create together, and the flow created from the plants. That is, they portray the lives of humans, the passing moments, and the everlasting moments. Hur always listens to music when she paints. Her strokes begin after listening to music for one or two hours, when she is invited to the feast of the flowers and music and finally becomes one with them. Her paintings are created when she is immersed in music and flowers, and she plays with the brushes like musicians playing a song with their instruments. At one moment, she may dance with the brush, and in another moment, she may give bold touches.
The flowers in Hur’s paintings are not simply clear and beautiful representations of flowers created from small and indifferent strokes that deliver the thoughts of the primary subject. Rather, the flowers gradually place themselves in our hearts, awaken the five senses, and stir excitement in our hearts with that subtle sensation. What the small strokes reveal are not simply clear representations of flowers, but flowers interpreted with Hur’s unique emotions and that permeate our bodies. This is why Hur’s flowers are filled with subtle metaphors that carry Hur’s energy intact, and make us feel heart-rending and want to stay with the flowers.
Looking at Hur Boree’s works is akin to navigating a maze in an exquisite world. They make us suddenly realize the whole, and experience the pleasure that comes from realizing stories created from fragmented time frames. The abstract perspective obtained from nature sits on the fine line between the conceptual and the abstract. Although Hur’s flowers seem like representations of flowers, from up close, the numerous strokes convey the synesthetic flow of time and space that instill in us the feeling of the passing times.
