A sparrow looking for an exit

GU NAYOUNG

From April 3 to 25, Gallery IMAZOO presents A Sparrow Looking for an Exit, a solo exhibition by artist Na-Young Koo.

GU NAYOUNG, A sparrow looking for an exit [20241115], 2024, Oriental ink_acrylic on paper, 45.5×59cm

Na-Young Koo draws inspiration from forms in nature, expressing trees and forests through symbolic patterns to explore themes of coexistence and harmony. A single tree represents an individual being, while a forest symbolizes a community living together. These elements appear repeatedly in her work. Over time, her pieces have undergone a process of simplification, gradually shifting focus from the tangible forms of trees to the essence of emotion and abstract expression.

GU NAYOUNG, Mute [20241202], 2024, Oriental ink_acrylic on Hanji, 56×100cm

By layering and overlapping patterns, the artist creates a calm and serene atmosphere, while the floating compositions add a sense of vitality. Her work is completed much like recording personal moments of life—through careful observation, variation, and restraint—similar to writing a poem or composing a piece of music.

GU NAYOUNG, Beyond Black [20210602], 2021, Oriental ink_acrylic on Hanji, 65×96 cm

These works, which capture sensory memories and inner narratives, invite viewers to interpret and imagine in their own way, offering a moment of empathy and healing. Just as her sincere creations have brought healing to herself, the artist hopes they will offer viewers a brief but comforting walk—a small moment of rest and solace.
