At The Moment

ROH Hyeun Woo, MOON Ho

노현우 ROH Hyeun Woo, No.108 AM0552 22° 11.AUG.2019, 2022, oil on canvas, 95×55

A painting can be a place where the artist’s thoughts and emotions are immersed. Experience and memory are the action of returning as a natural sense without one’s knowledge, and certain moments that the artist encounters are the starting point for the stage of constant creative enthusiasm. The compressed temporality in which the creator’s thoughts, which cannot contain all realities in the plane, are expressed in a shape, is the charm of the painting. Gallery Doll provides an opportunity to think about the moment that the artist decides to create the work and the painting is created through the works of ROH Hyeun Woo and MOON Ho.

Nature is an important theme for ROH Hyeun Woo. In his paintings, people and buildings rarely appear, and light is naturally absorbed into the landscape. The scenery is familiar, but unfamiliar, exciting, and mysterious. The psychological expression that is conveyed by obtaining a shape, not just a description of the appearance, will be the wish that the artist gets through the landscape. It is the appearance of nature that appears with subtlety, omission and description, and sometimes rough brush touches under the premise that it does not distort the shape. As a result of scientific analysis by observing the scene for a long time, his landscape has the power to induce the passage of time in a quiet atmosphere. Scenes that catch the viewer’s attention are not only filled with material. Non-material things such as air, wind, temperature, and humidity that can be recalled while watching his paintings.

It is a space where these various personalities meet and form, revealing a space where clouds or water are visible in the sky or sometimes foggy around the horizontal composition. The comfort the artist gets when he is in nature that experiences in person and meets the artist’s free thinking and becomes a beautiful landscape. The limit  and infinity of life with seriousness, and the distinction between matter and non-materials beyond time and space, also disappear, creating an opportunity for a transition that can be focused on the scene of becoming one. Rather than wishing for something, the scenery becomes a work that is the result of nature as the artist regards it precious. Just as it records the place found by accident, the energy obtained through inner communication with nature is transmitted to the landscape.

MOON Ho’s work, in which the experience of travel and the interpretation of daily life led to the landscape, is not aimed at reproducing the observed shape. It is based on facts, but the artist’s thoughts are added to support the sensibility of analog behavior as an oil painting. Work goes through the process of taking pictures and using computers to pixelate them. The original shape and color are dismantled, and the image that stands out like the color pieces is finished with oil on the canvas. By fragmenting the place and characters like pixels, the nature of the first relationship when filming disappears and forms an organic relationship with each other within a new form. Reproduction is a landscape obtained by directing scenes interpreted in digital. Drawing landscape works is based on facts, but there is also an abstract character that varies depending on the creator’s sensibility, so MOON Ho’s work is also to enjoy the process itself.

Observation leads to thought, complete with representation, and digital and analog elements come together. Taking and pixelating pictures is digital, but the act of seeing these images and completing the picture on the canvas is analog. In other words, digital and analog sensibilities are simultaneously revealed on the screen, and the paint layer on the screen is a created space. The closer we get, the more color fragments, but the farther we get, the more the shape is captured, showing a three-dimensional appearance with perspective emphasized on a large screen. It is interesting to see the shape that becomes obvious when viewed from the diagonal direction. The dual nature of abstraction and conception coexists is effective when viewing the work, and makes the shape of the character more ambiguous. The artist’s landscape started from capturing everyday life. If anonymity is a symbol of modern people, the content becomes deeper. He tries to see people’s inner world through the landscape.
