FULLMOON Moon of haert, Embracing Richness

2022. 2. 15 – 3. 5
Ryu Jaechun

Gallery NoW is seeking to make a new discovery of Korean paintings which are currently in a state of stagnancy but hopefully can succeed the position of K-pop in leading the K-wave. In this light, the gallery has recently taken notice of the ‘dynamic moves’ of Ryu Jaechun. As is known to all, Korean painting is classified as an isolated genre since it encountered millennial generation. It is true that Korean painting indeed faces imbalance in terms of the physical exhibition scale at museums or galleries, or in the art market. Today’s traditional Korean art is limited to monochromatic abstract art and a formulaic pop art trend, which is another reason Gallery NoW recognized Ryu.

Ryu is leading the transformation of Korean painting based on K-painting, which is converging with new technologies such as media patents, meta-intelligence, and AI, behind her bold worldview expressed with a grave feeling by using ink and traditional Korean paper. Ryu’s metaspace shows a network of expansion that crosses the borders of Korean painting by creating a multi-layered worldview that goes beyond the existing method of creating images of landscape objects in perspective.

This exhibition is Ryu’s attempt to show the artistic significance and potential of new Korean painting, and a place to showcase ‘Ryu Jaechun’s unique Korean paintings’ after honing her painting skills for the past three decades. The exhibition can be said to present a new vision of ‘Korean painting connected with technology’ through the past and present in which Ryu has felt joys and sorrows. In an era of abundance in which everything is superfluous, many artists express their scarcity through art. But Ryu attempts to present a balanced perspective on traditional Korean paintings, which have only been marginalized, by powerful production technology and novel imagination.
