Sooyoung SEO presents new works under the theme of the moon jars in the KIAF ART SEOUL 2020.
One of the most eminent Korean artists Whan-ki KIM especially appreciated moon Jars for their ultimate aesthetic value of simplicity and enjoyed using them as a subject of his works. Soon-woo Choi, the former director of the National Museum of Korea, also highly praised the vivid aura of warmth and geniality.
Only 20 to 30 of the Joseon Dynasty period’s moon jars exist, and the moon jar was recently sold for 3.1 billion won at auction in 2019.
Therefore it was recognized for its value, and Sooyoung SEO reinterprets moon jars in the unique painting.
New sculptures, made of Korean paper with ume blossoms in a milky white moon jar among the latest works, stands out.
Besides, unlike the existing two-dimensional paintings, Sooyoung SEO expresses the thick texture of Korean paper in the form of relief with a modern sense and the density of Matière, which is conveyed by mineral color, adds to the completeness of the work.
The new version of the moon jar, the works full of experimental spirit, is very touching. Looking at the artworks, you can feel the artist’s attitude toward the work, the traces of a struggle with agonizing time, and the artist’s spirit.
