Sejun Lee
“What is the best approach to take when it comes to drawing? How can I capture the essence of the world we inhabit and translate it onto my canvas?”
Sejun Lee’s art began with these inquiries. The world he describes is one where diverse, heterogeneous element collide and constantly undergo changes. To convey this concept, it is essential to incorporate a multitude of themes and subjects into a single work of art. Lee employs various techniques to create unique and captivating artworks. By connecting multiple canvases, Lee constructs expansive painting installations that invite viewers to immerse themselves in the artwork. Additionally, Lee skillfully weaves together multiple narratives within a single canvas, resulting in a rich and layered visual experience. Using contrasting colors, saturation, brushstroke speed, and paint thickness, Lee effectively communicates different sculptural elements, adding depth and dimension to the artwork.
The series, ‘Pictures of a Possible World,’ showcases his exhibited artwork at Kiaf, depicting intricate scenarios and evoking a range of emotions within a single canvas. Lee expressed that there are instances where emotions or events can be so complex that they defy expression within the confines of current languages. He elaborated, “At times, I envision speaking multiple words simultaneously in one breath, and this artwork is my endeavor to visually convey that idea.”
Lee successfully completed his academic journey at Hongik University, where he earned both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Painting. He is currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program at Hongik University. Lee was honored with the prestigious KSD Art Award in 2019 and had the privilege of participating in the esteemed SongEun Art Award last year. Their remarkable talent and artistic contributions have garnered significant recognition within the art community. What does he perceive as the distinctiveness of his work?
“My work reveals both the individual components and the overall picture simultaneously. Occasionally, these narratives expand and transform into other artworks, becoming separate smaller paintings that contribute to a larger composition. The stories within these paintings create a harmonious and interconnected worldview. Within lie numerous concealed narratives, waiting to be unearthed through scrutiny. Consequently, viewers can discover their own narratives and interpretations within my artworks. My work allows individuals to develop personal and profound connections, leading them to discover their own unique interpretations and perspectives.”
Lee expressed his love for painting. He encounters no obstacles or hardships in his work. “Painting is a source of immense joy for me, constantly inspiring me to capture the beauty that surrounds me. I find great inspiration in my artistic pursuits, which in turn influence various aspects of my life. The creation of art is a deeply personal and meaningful endeavor for me, devoid of any external pressures. I strive to create exceptional work with utmost sincerity, always staying true to myself.”
Lee has a strong passion for the captivating realm of science fiction (SF). He perceives it as a thought experiment regarding the future that awaits us. “The event offers a plethora of captivating artworks to behold and appreciate,” Lee remarked. “I wish for all Kiaf attendees to have a rich and rewarding experience.”
Lee concluded, “My work does not revolve around discovering a conclusive solution. I aim for the piece to captivate viewers, allowing each individual to interpret it in their own unique way. I have derived immense satisfaction from the process of crafting my piece, and it is my sincere desire that others may also partake in the myriads of emotions – joy, sadness, fear, happiness, despair, and longing – that I have encapsulated within my work.”
