Paige Jiyoung MOON | Precisely Depicted, Ordinary Yet Precious Moments

STEVE TURNER

Paige Jiyoung Moon

Paige Jiyoung Moon, who resides and works in Los Angeles, USA, meticulously paints everyday indoor and outdoor scenes, such as roads. These are precious moments that the artist wishes to remember. Some representative works include scenes of her husband and daughter sleeping early in the morning, road trips with family or friends, and her mother in the kitchen back in Korea. Therefore, her works are warm, comfortable, and charmingly detailed.

Moon graduated from Seoul National University of Science and Technology (SEOULTECH) and earned her degree from the prestigious Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. Since then, she has consistently been creating and presenting works depicting experiences with her family and friends. The urban landscapes and public places of Southern California, where she lives, often serve as the background for her paintings.

Her works are characterized by a very delicate depiction. Her paintings vividly depict everyday actions such as using a cellphone, lying in bed, or jogging. Because of this, even though her works are not very large, it takes her at least two months to complete one piece. Accordingly, appreciating her work also requires a considerable amount of time. She said, “I hope the audience takes the time to look at my work in detail. They can discover many intriguing elements in the smallest details of the piece.” The bright colors in her works also add to their charm, allowing viewers to recall their own daily lives, rediscover joyful memories, and feel an intimate connection with the artist.

Moon describes her creation process as follows: “When I’m with friends, I observe the surroundings and think about how to translate them into paintings. I recall moments I want to remember and humorous incidents that make me smile, and then I meticulously recall the people, furniture, and colors from those times. Afterward, I sketch on paper, considering the composition and details. I don’t depict everything exactly as it was, but sometimes I make alterations to enhance the liveliness and convey the theme.”

She added, “My biggest challenge as an artist is balancing painting with my role as a parent. I always want to create more works, but it’s not always possible.” Nevertheless, Moon captures and cherishes the time she spends with her child in her paintings. Through this, she reminds viewers of the beauty of slowing down, the bonds of family, and the importance of community.

Thanks to her meticulousness, unique perspective, ability to capture moments, and sense of humor, ordinary activities have become more special than anything else in the world. She said, “My goal is to continue growing as an artist in the future.”
