In Thinking

2020.5.20 – 2021.3.31

‘In-thinking’ is an on-going performance by Suh Yongsun and Gallery JJ which is being held at a farmhouse in Garugae village, Seojon-myeon. This purely in-process and progressive project has started at the end of May 2020, and will be shown in conjunction with an exhibition at Gallery JJ in March 2021. We focus on presenting the progression throughout rather than showcasing the end product.
Outside the red brick house built in the 1980s, you can see Suh’s ‘writing’ exercise scribed in white on each brick that wraps the building like a band. He is currently working on interior walls and on canvases in which we can glimpse his text and painting dialogues. They are mundane words such as hometown, traditional tea, tea house, birdsong, and cuckoo, while there are words of thought like desire, love, and space, and historical words like Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms, Middle Ages, and Jacob Goryeo. These are records that trace his consciousness each day, including those whom he met, quotidian thoughts, and words from memory. He also says it is a kind of self-portrait expressed in writing in which the image of the text is accentuated.
Passersby and neighbors who accidentally witness the work often start a conversation and look around the house. Due to his artistic intervention, this ordinary house that used to be a private space for daily routine has transformed into a communicative house that commune with nature, and a performative public space encouraging interactions.
Its suburban context and the interaction among the edifice, texts, and images yield a new meaning to the familiar landscape. Many coincidental experiences occur in the project, such as the passersby who unintentionally participate in the process of creating the work, Suh’s experience encountered on the site, and the wide range of audiences accepted by the open space.
