What is Minimalism Now?

2018

Minimalism is widely considered one of the most important art movements of the 20th century. With its place firmly in the art historical canon, its wide influence has entered the mainstream and now there is Minimalist design, fashion, and style. This effect and with the passing of the time, point to the need to reassess the movement, and to reclaim the polemical and singular nature of Minimalism. This talk will discuss the context of masterworks by Donald Judd, Dan Flavin, and other Minimalist artists, as well as consider the Post-Minimalist/Process Art that grew out of similar concerns. The talk will focus on the historicity of the movement as well as the connoisseurship of the objects to assert relevance in the 21st-century art landscape.
