One Horizon

Lee Jae-Hyun, Tatsuhito Horikoshi

Gallery Joeun presents One Horizon, a two-person exhibition by Lee Jae-hyun (b.1979) and Tatsuhito Horikoshi (b.1985), on view from October 10 to November 8.

This exhibition captures a moment where two different journeys converge on a single horizon, as the two artists explore the themes of life’s memories and the purity of adolescence through their portrayals of human figures.

“Lee Jae-hyun: Translating Memories into Art”
Lee Jae-hyun (b.1979) reconstructs personal memories and experiences into a painterly language. His works serve as visual records that connect the past and the present, delicately unfolding fragments of memory across the canvas. Using impasto techniques with thick layers of brushstrokes, free lines, and distorted forms, his paintings traverse the boundary between abstraction and figuration, evoking a sense of solitude and tension.
The images he captures from everyday life build narrative structures through dialogues between the internal and external, the self and the other.
In this exhibition, over ten newly unveiled works continue his existing body of work while capturing intimate moments of figures set within richly textured backgrounds. Rather than burying memory in the past, the artist interweaves it with present life, creating new stories. This approach transcends personal experience, evoking a universal sentiment and delivering a quiet yet powerful resonance to the viewer.
Born in 1979, Lee Jae-hyun studied architecture, sculpture, and fine art, and has developed his own unique artistic language across various media and forms. Now focusing primarily on painting, he continues to expand his practice by crafting original narratives on canvas. His works have been featured in solo exhibitions at Gallery Joeun, in the opening exhibition of Whitestone Gallery Seoul, as well as in solo and group exhibitions across the globe, including in Dubai, the Philippines, Hong Kong, and the United States.

“Tatsuhito Horikoshi: A Delicate Gaze into the Inner World”
Tokyo-based artist Tatsuhito Horikoshi portrays the purity, rebellious spirit, and identity of adolescence through his distinctive and delicate visual language. His calm-faced boys appear before viewers in classical portrait poses, with refined complementary contrasts, intricate brushwork reminiscent of drawing, and subtle coloration that oscillates between transparency and opacity—imbuing the works with nuanced emotional layers.
Working primarily in a countryside studio, Horikoshi creates his pieces in a setting of quiet solitude. When the noise of the city and contact with the outside world fade away, his imagination becomes sharper. The resulting artworks carry a deeply personal and intimate atmosphere. His subjects seem to embody long spans of time, and the artist regards the act of painting them as both a dialogue and a healing process. His worldview invites a quiet yet profound resonance within the viewer, acting as a conduit for emotional reflection.
In this exhibition, Horikoshi presents nine new, previously unreleased works.
Tatsuhito Horikoshi (b.1985) launched his international career with a solo exhibition in Hong Kong in 2020 and has since held shows in Paris, Beijing, and other cities. His successful Korean debut came in 2023 when all his works sold out through Gallery Joeun at KIAF Seoul. He continues to expand his practice across major art hubs such as Tokyo and New York. His works are part of prominent collections, including Japan’s Mr. I Collection and the Pigozzi Collection in Switzerland.
