Time Sleep

Kim Xian

정물 306, 2024, Acrylic on canvas, 117x80cm

ARTSIDE Gallery is pleased to present Time Sleep, a solo exhibition by Kim Xian (b. 1992), from June 13 to July 6. Kim, who has a large fan base at home and abroad for her unique works, uses digital tools to embody all the textures of creatures and objects as if they were plastic or ceramic, deconstructing their conventional meanings and revealing them in simple and honest forms. The resulting forms exhibit a flat three-dimensionality by maximizing the contrast of visual effects through the addition of thick, rough materials and smooth airbrush textures.

This exhibition is a “story that happened in a museum,” capturing the moment when still lifes that existed as artifacts are free to move and create situations when everyone is asleep. Having studied in China for many years, Kim noticed that most people look at artifacts with aspirations or meanings and try to understand and interpret their hidden meanings by themselves. While her works have shown space as a utopia in a state of “nothingness,” she aims to create a space where the artifacts, which are still lifes, move independently, avoiding the outside world. This allows the viewer to imagine the secret and mysterious stories of the objects.

Time Sleep, a solo exhibition of Kim’s witty works, will showcase her expanded oeuvre of still lifes and playfully realized situations that appear in unexpected places. We hopes that viewers will have an interesting experience of imagining and smiling at the still lifes that playfully move in the moment when everything falls asleep and silence comes.
