Kim Whanki
Kim Whanki had various experiments in search of pure abstraction during his stay in New York from 1963 to 1974. Whanki established the series of all-over dot paintings, a group of oil paintings filled with dots on the entire canvas, and it became his most representative style. The first appearance is found around 1969 and had actively developed from 1970 onwards. Approximately 150 all-over dot paintings were created until he passed away in July 1974.
This is the first exhibition that solely focused on Whanki’s all-over dot paintings at the Whanki Museum. Representing his selected works with related archives in chronological order from 1970 to 1974, this exhibition provides an opportunity to explore the development of his style and the philosophical implications of his paintings. The Catalogue Raisonné 1970-74 oil paintings will be published in this year.
