Light makes ordinary landscapes linger longest in our memories. Faus as a landscape. As time goes by, the scenery preserved in memory may become more vivid than it was inelf, but the air and time we encountered there, and the light that colored that particular moment.

Kang Jihyun captures these traces of light through her distinctive gaze. Rather than extraordinary events or dramatic scenes, her attention rests on the ordinary moments that everyone has encountered at least once. The changing seasons, the passage of the day, and the warmth of life quietly permeate these scenes, reviving familiar landscapes in a new form. Natural light and artificial illumination mingle across her surfaces, inviting us to look again at the everyday surroundings we have passed by without notice.

This exhibition brings together moments of light that the artist has observed and recorded over many years. Blue waves moving across the sea, alleys and playgrounds filled with spring blossoms, fields covered in sunlight, and city lights emerging at dusk are not scenes from exceptional destinations. They are moments drawn from the ordinary lives we inhabit. Yet when filtered through the artist’s gaze, these landscapes move beyond simple representation and are reborn as inner landscapes in which light, time, and memory overlap.

Today, we consume landscapes too quickly. We miss our surroundings while walking toward a destination, and in our effort to record a moment, we often fail to experience it fully. Familiarity dulls our senses, while the repetition of everyday life pushes the landscape into the background. Kang Jihyun brings that background forward once again.

Rather than showing us an entirely new world, she asks us to encounter a world that has always been beside us but has gone unseen. Standing before her works, we slow our steps and allow our gaze to linger, gradually rediscovering the beauty contained within an ordinary day.

Light is always around us, but not every light remains as a memory. The light that endures is the light of a moment upon which the heart once rested. Kang Jihyun quietly builds such moments upon the surface of her paintings, reminding us of the precious beauty held within everyday life.

Through this exhibition, I hope that the landscapes in each viewer’s memory may shine once again. May this be an opportunity to discover one’s own light within days that have passed unnoticed and within familiar surroundings, and to preserve for a long time the gentle warmth once held by ordinary life.
