Blooming Text

Bori Yoon

Bori Yoon employs an original collage technique in which she collects text from magazines and newspapers, slices it into fine strips, and arranges these fragments on canvas to create images. While the articles from which the texts are taken serve as vehicles for conveying social messages, once dismantled, the words lose their original meaning and take on an entirely new significance as visual elements.

Bori Yoon’s art works begins with the question of how the conflicts and contradictions embedded in the realities of everyday life can be transformed into something aesthetic. By deconstructing fragmented stories of society and translating them into idealized, poetic images, she explores not only the beauty of the visual image but also the possibility of reflection on contemporary society and the healing potential of art.

Her solo exhibition 「Blooming Text」, presented at Gallery Imazoo, unfolds around a title that can be understood as both “text in bloom” and “opening text.” Like a preface that welcomes readers before the main body of a book, the title serves as an opening to the exhibition—a threshold into a space where a fairy-tale-like story begins.

It also reflects Gallery Imazoo’s curatorial gesture of reading her works and distilling the thoughts and impressions they evoke. At the same time, the title alludes to Yoon’s own process: opening the pages of magazines and allowing something new to bloom from them.

Standing before these images, where letters stripped of their original meaning blossom once again into beautiful landscapes, we are invited to discover a possibility in which reality and fantasy do not erase one another, but coexist. Blooming Text offers a moment to pause before this delicate transformation and consider how fragments of our complicated reality might be reassembled into images of beauty, contemplation, and renewal.
