Who Will Go Before Us

2026. 10. 22. – 11. 14.
Gallery FM is pleased to present 《𝐖𝐡𝐨 𝐖𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐆𝐨 𝐁𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐔𝐬》, a solo exhibition by Minsoo Bhan, on view from Oct 22 to Nov 14, 2026.
Throughout history, humanity has looked for something to lead the way—to show us where to go before we move forward. Gods and heroes, nations and ideologies, science and technology, and, more recently, capital and images. We have believed in them, followed them, and imagined the future through them. At times, when there was no one to lead the way, we created something ourselves and placed our hopes in it to guide us.

“Who will go before us?”
This question is no longer limited to a religious context. What should we believe in, and what should we follow? When we are uncertain about what is right, we often look to the choices of others as a point of reference. What many people look at, what many people desire, and where many people are heading can, at some point, become a standard in itself.

In Bhan’s 𝘈𝘳𝘵 𝘈𝘶𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 series, the auction house is more than a place where artworks are bought and sold. The crowds depicted in his paintings are looking at a single artwork, but what they see is not simply the work itself. They are also looking at the value assigned to an image, the desires surrounding it, and the world shaped by that value.
The auction house is a place where such belief takes form. When people assign meaning and value to an image, and those who desire it gather around it, the image becomes more than an object—it becomes a point of reference. Perhaps humanity has not simply moved beyond the age of gods. Instead, in every era, we have created new objects of belief, placed our trust in them, and continued to create new “gods.”

𝐖𝐡𝐨 𝐖𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐆𝐨 𝐁𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐔𝐬 follows the gaze of the crowd. We look ahead, waiting for someone or something to move forward before us, only to find that what lies ahead is ultimately made up of the images, values, and desires we ourselves have created.
Who will go before us? And what will we believe in as we follow?
Through the space of the auction house and the collective gaze of those gathered within it, Bhan’s work turns these questions back toward us. His paintings invite us to look again at what we are following—and at what has led us to believe in it.
