Gallery MAC continues hosting a group exhibition for female artists with the vol.2 of Sense and Gaze in 2024, following the initial exhibition in 2022. The term “female artist group exhibition” refers not simply to gender differentiation but rather to the collective concept of “gender,” encompassing socially constructed roles, behaviors, expectations, and identifications, aiming to explore how they perceive the world and their perspectives.

While it’s not possible to generalize due to differences in personality, experience, and environmental factors, there undoubtedly exist societal roles and cultural expectations associated with being a “woman.” However, how these gender roles manifest within the role of an “artist” and whether there are gender-based expectations or limitations are questions that the Gallery MAC exhibition Sense and Gaze seeks to address.

“Sense” and “Gaze” are crucial concepts in our understanding and experience of the world. “Sense” refers to our cognitive ability to perceive and process external stimuli, starting from what we commonly refer to as our five senses. We perceive and experience the world through the information received by our sensory organs. “Gaze” denotes how we view the world or our visual standpoint, influenced by individual experiences, values, and cultural backgrounds. It determines how we perceive and interpret objects, people, situations, etc., and also plays a role in directing our attention or focus on specific subjects.

What does the world look like through the “Sense” of contemporary artists Hyoeun KIM, Seim SHON, Yeonkyung JUNG, and Rye CHOI? What lies at the end of each of their “Gaze”? Through a meeting with the artists scheduled for April 20th at 3 p.m., we aim to discuss the worlds and perspectives they have sensed as artists and as women. We seek to explore the complementary and interconnected concepts of “Sense” and “Gaze” as we follow the trajectories of their presented lives, thereby endeavoring to better understand and explore the world.
