Installation View of at LEE EUGEAN GALLERY
LEE EUGEAN GALLERY is pleased to present the group exhibition from February 29 to March 29, 2024. Following the previous exhibition , the second exhibition of young artists at our gallery features around 40 paintings by Jang Seung Keun, Jo Jae, Meeso, and Yang-ha. This exhibition tries to capture the moment when an individual person living in a rapidly changing era takes a ‘dip’ into the ‘deep’ inner mind. Modern people confront problems like constant anxiety, conflict, and confusion from diverse types of media. We planned this exhibition hoping to have people take the time to stop and look back at their true inner-self rather than remaining immersed in negative emotions. Each person sees a different aspect of themselves when they face their true inner mind without their guard up. The exhibition includes various works in which four artists have tried to solve these personal moments in their own way.
미소, 너에게 겨눈거야, 2024, oil on canvas, 194x390cm
Meeso’s (b.1993) artworks offer a rugged and bold feeling through the expression of their unique rough texture. The artist has stated that her artistic process and the world are similar as both of them take unexpected turns. Although many situations and incidents increase tension, the artist tried to concentrate on her inner mind and relieve it. In this exhibition, you can see works that coordinate color, transparency, and density to make the sketches on the screen containing a great intensity look a little lighter. Through these works, the artist’s hope is that a world that is neither too serious nor too light can be perceived.
Meeso graduated BA Fine Art at Hongik University and MFA Fine Arts at Korea National University of Arts. She has held solo exhibitions including 《Retrospective 2018-2022》 (Gallery 175, 2022); 《With the sinking thought that Sook-hee wil save me if something happens》 (Open studio, 2021); 《His skin is brighter than my future》 (Art and Culture space Yeoinsuk, 2017). Also, she has participated in the group exhibitions at Outhouse, LEE EUGEAN GALLERY, BGA Index and so on.
양하, A Drawing for Blowing Up_35, 2023, oil and acrylic on canvas, 40x40cm
Yang-ha (b.1994) collects contradictory images from history and religion and reorganizes them onto a flat medium. The works in this exhibition were painted based on the Inter-Korean Liaison Office bombing in 2020. To the artist, who lived in the Netherlands at that time, this accident is remembered through the beauty of images rather than the fear of reality. Following this line of thought, she visually maximizes this disjunction and depicts it on her canvas. An image of an ‘explosion’ usually reminds one of violence, war, tragedy, and numerous other negative things, but the artist reconstructs its image through soft pastel coloring in her own way.
Yang-ha lives and works in Seoul and Amsterdam. She graduated BFA Fine Arts at Ewha Womans University and MFA with Cum Laude, Painting at Frank Mohr Institute. She has held solo exhibitions including 《Open the Window》 (OCI Museum, 2023); 《The Alarm Rings at Noon on the First Monday of Every Month》 (Sahngup Gallery, 2022); 《I Pretend to Be Okay but, I Am Not Okay》 (Gasamrojieul, 2021). Also, she has participated several group exhibitions at Gallery Kiche, gallery TOWED (Tokyo), Van Nelle Fabriek (Rotterdam), Space Mirage and so on.
장승근, 뻗는선 05, 2023, oil on canvas, 116.8 x 80.3cm
Jang Seung Keun (b.1995) reflects his view of the world into the screen through colors and overlapping lines based on intuitive drawing. He does not simply recreate an object, but rather focuses on the record of physical movement. Therefore, the object on canvas takes on an ambiguous shape rather than a clear one. The series mainly uses plants that can be easily seen near apartments and on streets as its subjects. These plants, which were not naturally grown in the wild but were planted for landscaping, resemble modern people who are wary of the symbiotic nature of the world and insist on “living individually.” Visitors can confront the artist’s concerns through these works and further reflect on their own lives.
Jang Seung Keun graduated BFA Western Painting at Chungang University. He has held solo exhibition including 《Rondo》 (Onsu Gong-gan, 2023); 《Cyber Funk》 (UARTSPACE, 2022); 《Dazzling band of Bremen》 (Inyoung Gallery, 2020). He has also participated the group exhibition at Gallery Theo, DOHING ART, Gallery BK and so on.
조재, 부스러기26, 2023, acrylic on canvas, 23x16cm
Jo Jae’s (b.1990) works focus on the vectorization of images of disaster. In an increasingly accelerating modern society, natural or social disasters repeatedly spread and consume, and the initial singularities that lead to these events tend to deviate from its substance. The artist fragments these images through vector digitalization and reflects the reality of how far they have diverged from their original state. She intends to provide viewers with an experience to help them independently recognize and judge real problems on their own through these works.
Jo Jae received BFA Western Painting from Sungkyunkwan University and MFA from Royal College of Art. Also, she completed the Ph.D. program in Sculpture at Seoul National University. She has held solo exhibitions including 《Melting Things》 (Keumho Museum of Art, 2023); 《Meeting Point》 (G Gallery, 2021); 《Desensitizer》 (Interart Channel, 2020); 《5 Minutes Rest, then 30 Seconds》 (413 Space, 2018). She has also participated group exhibitions at WWNN, Museum SODA, Unit 1 Gallery (London), and so on.
