KIAF SEOUL 2020 Special Exhibition 'eeing the Deep Resonance - Korea Modern Contemporary Abstract', presents about 40 masterpieces from the artists (Whanki KIM, Seobo PARK , Hyongkeun YUN, Ungno LEE, Sanghwa CHUNG, Wookkyung CHOI, Chonghyun HA, etc), who contributed greatly to the formation and development of Korean abstract art. Please enjoy the diverse trends and uniqueness of abstract art in various genres, including western painting, oriental painting, and sculpture.

  • 송영수(1930-70)는 서울 출신으로, 서울대학교와 대학원을 졸업하고 모교에서 교수로 재직하면서 왕성한 작품활동을 하였습니다. 1950년대에는 석고나 대리석, 나무로 만든 인체작품들이 주종을 이룹니다. 1956년에는 철판들을 용접하여 만든 독특한 추상 작품을 국내 최초로 시도하여 큰 주목을 받게 됩니다. 이 시기의 작품 역시 완전 추상보다는 특정한 이미지를 읽을 수 있는 반추상 작품이 주를 이룹니다. 이 작품에서처럼, 그의 작품 속에 자주 등장하는 새나 인체의 형상이 그대로 추상 작품 속에 하나의 모티프로 재등장하고 있음도 그의 성향이 추상보다는 구상에 연유하고 있음을 말해 줍니다. 철로 제작한 새의 형상에서 볼 수 있듯이, 작가는 대상의 가장 독특한 부위만을 강조하고 나머지 부분은 과감히 생략하곤 합니다. Youngsu SONG (1930-1970) was born in Seoul. He graduated and served as a professor at Seoul National University and devoted himself to the full development of his own unique style of sculpture. In the 1950s, gypsum, marble, and the human figure in wood were the mainstream. Meanwhile, he started to be known for the abstract sculpture made of the welded metal panel. His works during this period were not fully abstract, but more like semi-abstract which you may read a certain image out of it. In this work, the appearance of birds and human bodies (often appearing in his works) as motifs in abstract works also suggests that his tendency is more related to figurative than abstracts. As you can see in the iron-made bird, he only emphasizes the most unique parts of the object and boldly drops the rest.

  • 장성순은 1927년 함흥 태생으로, 서울대 미술대학을 수학하였습니다. 또한 우리나라 현대미술 운동을 주도한 현대미술가협회의 창립회원이었습니다. 1960년대에 들어서면서 장성순은 불을 붙여 태우는 새로운 기법을 국내 최초로 시도하여 화단에서 주목을 받게 됩니다. 이러한 연유로, 그는 1961년 파리 비엔날레에 출품하는 한국작가를 선정하는 심사에서, 일약 1석을 차지하게 됩니다. 이 작품은 파리비엔날레의 출품작으로 의미가 높습니다. 화면의 상단부는 비교적 부드럽게 면처리 된 반면, 하단부는 강렬한 암갈색을 바탕으로 두텁고 격렬한 마티에르와 붓질이 생동하고 있어서 뜨거운 추상을 느낄 수 있습니다. 작가가 30대 중반에 제작한 작품으로, 힘과 열정이 넘쳐 나며, 제작 당시 우리나라의 앵포르멜 경향을 잘 반영하고 있는 작품입니다. Sungsoun CHANG, born in 1927 in Hamheung, Korea, graduated from Seoul National University, College of Art. He was a founding member of the Association of Modern Art, which has led the Korean modern art movement. He was recognized by initially applied the burning technique in the 1960s. In this regard, his work has been selected as one of the Korean artists to enter the Paris Biennale in 1961. Entry for the Paris Biennale makes this work even more meaningful. The top half has been smoothly painted while the bottom half has been painted in a deep and dark brown on the background with the thick and vivid matiere. And the brushstroke is close to the Kandinsky-ish abstract. It was produced in his late 30s, represents the power and enthusiasm, and also reflects the informel trend of Korea at that time.

  • 재일작가 곽인식(1919-1988)은 일본의 초현실주의, 앵포르멜(Informel), 구성주의 등 복합적인 영향을 받아 다양한 작품 활동을 전개합니다. 1960년대 접어들면서 작품세계에 일대 전환점을 맞게 되는데, 이는 그가 작품의 오브제로 사용한 유리, 놋쇠, 철판, 돌 등 다양한 소재를 이용한 작품들을 통해서였습니다. 어느 날, 길을 걷다 우연히 발견한 도심 속 유리의 아름다움에 푹 빠져, 작가는 유리가 있는 장소와 거리를 매일 걸어 다녔다고 합니다. 그래서 시작한 유리 깨기 작업은, 미리 깨어진 유리의 단편을 유리평면 위에 붙여 가는 형식이 먼저 나타나고, 이후에 판유리의 전체 형상을 그대로 간직한 채로 금을 내는 형식 등 2가지 형식이 순차적으로 나타납니다. 이 작품은 나중에 나타난 형식으로, 유리 뒷면에 균일한 바탕색이 존재하고, 일정한 계획 하에 이루어진 것 같은 유리의 깨짐이 보입니다. 그의 이러한 작품들은 1960년대 말 일본 미술계에 등장한 모노하에 영향을 준 것으로 평가받고 있습니다. Insik QUAC (1919-1988), a Korean-Japanese artist who is widely influenced by the integrated Japanese surrealism, informel, and constructivism. In the 1960s, there was a huge turning point in his artworks by using glass, brass, steel panel, stone, etc. as his objects for medium. One day, he accidentally discovered the beauty of glass in the city. From that day, the more he walked around the city, the deeper he was into it. He started to stick the pieces of the broken glass on the plane glass at first and secondly, make the cracks on the plate glass while it remains the original shape. This work is one of the mentioned later, there is an evenly painted background and the well-planned cracks are seen on the plate glass. In this regard, the Mono-ha rise in Japan in the late 1960s was likely to influenced by his works.

  • 박노수 (1927-2013)는 청전(寺田) 이상범에게 사사했으며 서울대 미대를 졸업하였습니다. 국전에서 연속 4회 특선을 수상하여 추천 작가 및 심사위원이 되었습니다. 화풍에 있어서, 초기에는 배경을 비워 두거나 최소화함으로써 인물을 강조하여 그렸습니다. 그러나, 점차 동양적 자연관에 따라 자연을 배경으로 인물을 작게 그리게 됩니다. 그는 당시 일본색을 없애자는 시대적 요구에 따라 근대적인 감각으로 색을 과감하게 사용하면서 필선을 부각하여 전통적인 동양화를 계승했습니다. 이 작품의 화면은 빈 여백이 없이 꽉찬 구도로 설정되어 있습니다. 짙은 먹을 과감하게 표현하고 있어서 작품제작 당시, 동양화단과 앵포르멜 양식 간의 일정한 영향관계를 짐작할 수 있습니다. 또한, 화면의 대부분을 차지하는 거대한 산 너머에 말을 타고 가는 소년의 자세에서 극적인 동세감이 느껴집니다. 이러한 화면 분위기로 인하여 다소 초현실주의적인 분위기 마저 느껴집니다. Nosoo PARK (1927-2013) learned from Sangbeom LEE and graduated from the College of Fine Arts at Seoul National University. He won four special prizes in a row at the Korean National Exhibition and became the selected artist and a judge for the award. In the early days, in his painting style, he emphasized the figure (usually a person) by leaving the background blank or minimized. However, in accordance with the Oriental perspective of nature, he gradually drew the human figures small. At that time, he boldly used color with a modern sense in response to the demands of the times to eliminate the characteristics of Japan, and succeeded to traditional Oriental painting by highlighting the lines of drawing. The canvas of this work is set to full composition with no empty spaces. The bold expression of dark (Chinese) ink explains the relationship of influence between the Oriental painting society and the Informel style at the time of production. Also a boy riding horse across the huge mountain which takes up most of the canvas invites a dramatic sense of movement. Even, you may be found it surreal because of the atmosphere of this work.

  • 1936년생인 김형대는 서울대학교 3학년에 재학 중, 반(反) 국전의 기치를 내건 <벽(壁) 동인>에 가입하여 60년과 61년에 3번이나 덕수궁 벽에 작품을 출품한 재야작가에서 출발하였습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 61년에는 국전에 앵포르멜 양식의 작품(환원 B)를 출품하여, 국가재건최고회의 의장상을 받아 일약 주목의 대상이 되었습니다. 그 후 63년부터는 국전 내의 개성적인 작가그룹인 <창작미술협회>에서 5회나 출품할 정도로 국전 내에서 안정적인 길을 걷게 됩니다. 이 작품도 이러한 시기(1963년)에 제작된 것으로, 짙고 강렬한 색채, 서체를 방불케 하는 강한 붓질 등이 특징인 앵포르멜 양식의 작품입니다. Hyungdae KIM, born in 1936, became a member of the coterie called Byuk (Wall:壁), which resisted against the existing art scene at that time when he was a junior at Seoul National University. And he submitted his works three times to the Wall of Deoksugung Palace in 1960 and 1961. He got a lot of attention by winning the award from the chairman of the Supreme Council for National Reconstruction at the National Art Exhibition in Korea in 1961 for his work of Informel style work Restoration B. Since the year 1963, his works have been selected five times by the Creative Art Association of the National Art Exhibition which has strong preference and character. This work, also completed in that year (1963), is also a type of informel style with deep and vivid color and a powerful brush stroke.

  • 김형대 추상화풍의 경과과정을 크게 나누어 보면, 앵포르멜, 기하학적 추상, 단색추상화의 코스를 해당 시기에 맞추어 조형화하고 있습니다. 한국의 추상(비구상) 회화의 시작과 마찬가지로 그 역시 앵포르멜 풍에서 시작됩니다. 이번에 출품된 그의 또 다른 작품과 제작 시기와 크기, 기법이 같으며, 색상만 달라서, 서로 쌍(대련, 對聯)을 이루어 감상할 수 있습니다. Hyungdae KIM’s art career in a chronological order seen through three sections: Informel, geometric abstraction, and Danseak(Korean monochrome painting) abstraction. He started his art career with the informel, just like Korean abstract art has begun. And this work has completed in the same year, in the same size with the same technique only in a different color of the other work, we are presenting this time, therefore, you may appreciate this in pair with it.

  • 우향(雨鄕) 박래현( 1920-1976)은 평안남도 진남포 출신으로, 1940년 일본으로 유학을 가서 미술을 배우게 됩니다. 선전(鮮展)의 최고상인 창덕궁상을 수상하기도 합니다. 1940년대에는 일본 화법의 인물화를 주로 그리며, 1950년대에는 대상(對象)에 대한 입체적인 형태 해석과 면 분할이라는 반추상적(半抽象的)인 작업을 하였습니다. 1960년대에는 본격적으로 추상성이 강한 화풍을 이루었으며, 1970년대에는 판화라는 새로운 기법을 통하여 독자적인 회화 세계를 구축합니다. 전통적인 동양화 재료를 구사하면서 서구적인 공간 설정을 화면 속에 끌어들여, 감각적인 색채와 대담하고 강렬한 화풍을 이룩하는 등 독자적인 경지를 개척하였습니다. Rehyun PARK (1920-1976), born in Jinnampo, Pyeongannam-do, went to Tokyo Women's Art School in 1940. She received the best prize, called Changdeokgung Palace Prize, at the Joseon Art Exhibition. In the 1940s, she drew mainly the portraits in the Japanese painting style, and in the 1950s she pursued in semi-abstract work such as analysis of three-dimensional structure and dividing of the sides of the subject. From the 1960s, she produced pure abstract paintings, and in the 1970s, she created the unique art world of hers by adopting print. While using traditional Oriental painting materials, it borrowed Western spatial settings and pioneered its own unique landscape of painting by creating exceptional color choices and bold and intense painting styles.

  • 재불 추상작가인 이성자(Seundja Rhee, 1918-2009)는 1951년 도불하여 2009년 작고할 때까지 프랑스를 주 무대로 활동하였습니다. 회화, 판화, 도자기, 태피스트리, 모자이크, 시화집 등 다양한 장르의 작품을 남겼습니다. 그는 1950년대 말부터 프랑스 화단의 주목을 받았고, 1960년대에 이르면 알베르토 마넬리, 장 아르프, 소니아 들로네등 당대에 국제적으로 유명했던 작가들과 대등하게 교류하며 작가로서의 위상을 인정받았습니다. 이성자의 이런 활동은 한국과 프랑스 양국의 현대 미술에 중요한 의미를 가지며, 국내작가 중심의 시각에서 벗어나, 국제적인 차원에서 간과(看過)되었던 한국 추상미술의 수준과 다양성을 좀 더 풍부하게 해 주고 있습니다. 1965에 제작된 이 작품은, 우리의 전통 설화인 <오작교(烏鵲橋)> 이야기를 작가만의 추상언어로 아름답게 조형화하였습니다. 견우를 상징하는 직사각형과 직녀를 상징하는 부드러운 곡선, 그 사이를 오작교가 이어 주고 있습니다. 그 주변에는 수 많은 점과 짧은 선들로 사방에서 모여 드는 새들을 표현하였고, 하얀 초승달이 1년만에 만나는 연인들의 애절한 마음을 비쳐주고 있습니다. 1년이 아니라, 15년만에 귀국해서 아들을 만나는 작가의 절절한 모정(母情)이 담겨 있습니다. Seundja RHEE (1918-2009) moved to France in 1951 and showed active work practices in France for 60 years until she died. She presents the unique oeuvres in the extensive range of works. Her name was started to mentioned in the French art scene from the late 1950s and in the 1960s, she has been recognized along with the internationally well-known artists such as Alberto Magnelli, Jean Arp, and Sonia Delaunay. Her works and activities are very important to contemporary art in both Korea and France and it enriched the level and diversity of abstract art in Korea which has been easily ignored in the international art stream. This work produced in 1965 represents the Korean fairy tale called ‘Ohjakgyo’ in her very own abstractive language. The rectangle represents Gyeon-woo(male character), the curvy lines are Jing-nyo(female character), and there is an Ohjakgyo bridge in between them. You may see the birds in dots and short lines and also a sickle moon which is lighting their reunion after a year apart. It also contains the mother’s love who has met her son when she came back home in 15 years, not one year. * Ohjakgyo - refers to the bridge that birds make once a year to connect the male and female main characters in Korean traditional fairy tale.

  • 우향 박래현(1920-1976)은 주로 광복 후, 일본식 사실주의적 묘사에서 벗어나 서양의 입체주의에 몰두하였습니다. 그러나 이는 입체주의에 대한 맹목적 표방이 아닌 부드러운 곡선과 동양화 특유의 흰 여백을 통한 입체주의의 재해석이라 할 수 있습니다. 1950년대에는 극히 일상적인 풍경에서 모티브를 찾았으나, 1960년대로 접어들면서 대상을 극복한 순수추상의 세계로 나아갑니다. 작가는 여성 특유의 감성을 바탕으로 한 섬세한 설채와 면 분할에 의한 화면구성으로 새로운 조형실험(造形質)을 전개하며 순수추상의 세계로 더욱 몰입을 합니다. 1964년의 미국, 유럽, 중동 여행과 1967년의 남미 여행 그리고 한국적인 소재들로부터 얻은 영감 등을 통하여 1960년대 중반부터는 완전한 추상화의 단계로 들어서게 됩니다. 이러한 영향으로 직선과 원으로만 구성하여 자칫 딱딱할 수도 있었을 화면은 먹의 번짐과 노랑 짙은 청색, 검정의 색채대비를 통해 극복되고 있습니다. 화면의 중간 중간의 흰 공백은 작품에 여유를 주는 역할을 하는데 그 부분에 함께 배치된 원형은 색다른 묘미를 줍니다. 이 같은 작품 경향은 작가가 고대문명의 발상지를 여행하면서 받은 원시미술적 특징을 반영한 것으로, 전체적으로 매우 장식적이며 감각적인 느낌을 줍니다. After Korea’s liberation from Japanese colonial rule, Rehyun PARK (1920-1976) devoted herself to Western cubism away from Japanese-style realism. However, this was not just acceptance of cubism, but a reinterpretation of it through soft curves and white space unique to Oriental painting. In the 1950s, she found motifs in everyday landscapes, but as she entered the 1960s, she moved on to a pure abstract world that beyond the object. She was more immersed in the world of pure abstraction by conducting a new formative experiment with delicate Seolchae (Painting method of color over the Chinese ink on base) based on the unique sensibility of women and spatial composition by dividing the sides. Through her travel to the United States, Europe, and the Middle East in 1964, and to South America in 1967 and inspiration from Korean materials, she entered the stage of complete abstraction from the mid-1960s. In this circumstances, the frame could be rigid with only the lines and circles, however, she used the smudging ink, yellow, dark blue, and black in colors contrast to overcome it. The white space in the middle of the frame relaxes the work, and the circles placed together gives a different type of joy. This tendency reflects the primitive artistic characteristics that the artist inspired while traveling to the birthplace of ancient civilization, made her work a very decorative and aesthetic overall.

  • 한국에서 근대적 의미의 추상미술이 처음 시도된 것은 1930년대 후반부터입니다. 이 시기에 추상미술의 도입과 전개에서 중심적 역할을 한 작가는 김환기와 유영국입니다. 당시 이들은 일본으로 건너간 유학생으로서, 개방된 예술 분위기 속에서 미술활동의 아무런 제약이 없으므로 새로운 서양의 화풍을 접하게 되었습니다. 반면에 아카데미즘이 주류를 이루는 「선전」을 중심으로 한 국내 화단에서는 추상미술이 개입될 여지가 없었던 것입니다. 유영국은 이러한 상황 속에서 추상미술을 도입하였고, 산과 자연을 작품표현의 주된 목표로 삼아, 일생에 걸쳐 꾸준히 표현합니다. 이 작품이 제작된 1968년은 작가가 기하학적 추상작업을 시도한 시기입니다. 산과 자연의 모습을 단순화된 선과 면의 대조로 화면은 정리되고 추상화되었습니다. 산의 추상적인 기본 형태와도 같은 삼각형이나 역삼각형, 무한 공간 속에 지평선과 같은 평면의 선, 대각선과 같은 사선 등이 기하학적 형태로 환원되었습니다. The abstract art, in the meaning of the modern concept, has been introduced in the Korean art scene in the late 1930s. Whanki KIM and Youngkuk YOO were the key persons inviting and releasing abstract art during this time of period. They studied in Japan, without a restriction on artistic activities in on liberal art atmosphere, so they came across western arts naturally. Meanwhile, there was no room for abstract art in the Korean art scene since it was mainly dealt with the "propaganda" led by the academism. In this circumstance, Yoo adopted abstract art and had the main purpose of presenting the mountain and nature throughout his artistic life. This work has produced in 1968 when he tried the geometric abstract. The minimized lines and sides represent the mountain and nature, make the frame simple and organized to be more abstractive. The triangles and inverted ones are the basic abstract forms of the mountain, and the lines of the sides can be the horizon in the infinity space, and also the diagonal lines also transformed into the abstract elements.

  • 1969년에 제작된 이 작품은, 핵 시리즈 작품 중에서 초창기에 해당하는 작품입니다. '핵'이란 명칭은, 작가가 활동한 <오리진(origin> 그룹에서 지향하는 '근원','본질'에 부합하며, 세상을 좌지우지 할 수 있는 막강한 힘의 원천을 상징합니다. 1966년 '핵'이란 명칭을 처음 사용한 이후로, '핵 시리즈'는 작가의 예술적 지향점을 함축하는 대표작품이 되었으며, 1990년대까지 파이프 형상을 모티브로 하여 20년 이상 제작됩니다. 이 작품은, 1969년, 제18회 국전에서 특전을 수상한 작품과 제목, 연도, 명칭, 크기, 내용 측면에서 매우 유사한 작품이라 주목됩니다. 상하 대칭적인 구성의 진폭이 더욱 확장되면서 구체화되었고, 치밀한 처리로 파이프의 질량감을 강하게 나타내는 등 기존의 앵포르멜 성향과는 확연히 다른 새로운 모습의 기하학적 추상회화를 보여 줍니다. This work, produced in 1969, is one of the early works of his series of Nucleus. ‘Nucleus’ refers to the origin of the power which can make a big difference in the world and also it is not so far from the motto of the coterie: where he was once involved, the ‘fundamental’ and ‘essence’. Since the first use of the name “Nucleus” in 1966, the “Nucleus Series” has become a representative works that imply his artistic orientation. It has been produced for more than 20 years until the 1990s with the motif of a pipe-shape. This work is recognizable since of the similarity in terms of title, produced year, size, and the contents to the 18th National Art Exhibition in 1969. This suggests a new version of the geometric abstract, different from the existing informel, by broadening the amplitude of the vibration in the top and bottom symmetrical composition and specified. Also, the elaborate procedure gave the pipe a sense of mass.

  • 청화 하인두(1930-1989)는 전후 1세대 작가로서 식민지 경험과 전쟁, 그리고 반공 이데올리기를 몸으로 체험하였습니다. 그는, 종교적 의미가 지닌 우주적인 질서, 생명의 신비와 빛 등을 독특한 추상형식과 결합하여 독창적인 예술세계를 구축하였습니다. 초기(1950년 말~ 60년대 초)에는 추상표현주의를 도입하며, 중기에는 불교적 관념을 예술세계와 융합하여 <밀문(密門)>, <묘계환중(妙契環中)>, <만다라(曼茶羅)> 씨리즈를 제작합니다. 말기에는 만다라에서 <혼(魂)불>과 <빛의 회오리> 등으로 변화되면서 작가 예술의 정수를 이룩하게 됩니다. 이 작품은 병마(病魔)와의 싸움 속에서 느끼는 짙은 종교적 체험이 표현된 말기의 작품입니다. Indoo HA (1930-1989), a first generation of the postwar, went through the period of Japanese colonial rule, and the war as well as the ideology of anti-communist. He created a unique world of art by combining the cosmic order of religious meaning, the mystery, and light of life with his special abstract form. In the early days (the late 1950s – early 1960s), he adopted abstract expressionism, and in the middle, he brought the idea of Buddhism to his world of art and produced the series of ‘Milmoon’; ‘Myigyehwanjoong’; and ‘Mandala’. In latter days, it was a literal peak of his artistic life by variating Mandala to ‘Honvul’ and ‘Spiritual Fire-Whirling Fire’. This work represents his sincere religious experience during his severe fight against the serious illness in his latter days.

  • 류경채(1920-1995)는 황해도 해주 출신입니다. 일찍부터 미술분야에 두각을 나타냈으며, 1949년 제1회 대한민국미술전람회에서 「폐림지 근방」으로 대통령상을 수상하여 주목을 받았습니다. 그의 작품세계는 크게 1940년대에서 1950년대 말까지의 서정적 리얼리즘 경향의 작품, 1960년대에는 대상이 해체되는 비구상적 경향, 1970년대 순수추상의 세계를 보여 주는 작품, 1970년대 후반부터 전개되는 색면 구성으로 구분할 수 있습니다. 특히, 1960년은 작가의 화업(畵業)에서 중요한 전환기가 됩니다. 60년 이전 까지는 사물과 자연의 구체적 대상이 있었지만, 60년 이후부터는 화폭의 물감들을 과감히 지워 나가는 작업을 반복합니다. 물감을 두텁게 바른 후 다시 긁어 내기를 반복하여 완전한 추상성을 구축하게 됩니다. 1962년도에 제작된 이 작품도, 이러한 시대적 상황을 반영하고 있으며, 앵포르멜 화풍으로 제작되었습니다. 격정적인 붓질과 물감의 두터운 마티에르, 형체를 알아보기 힘든 추상적 구성으로 <풍화>를 표현하고 있습니다. Kyungchai RYU (1920-1995) was born in Haeju, Hwanghae-do Province. He distinguished himself early in the field of art and received the Presidential Award for ‘Neighborhood of Bear Mountain’ at the first Korean Art Exhibition in 1949. His artistic work can be largely divided into four parts: The lyrical realism trends from the 1940s to the late 1950s; the nonfigurative tendency for the object to be deconstructed in the 1960s; the works that show the world of pure abstraction in the 1970s; and the development of the color field since the late 1970s. In particular, 1960 was an important turning point in his artistic life. Before 1960, there was a specific object of things and nature, but since 1960, he has repeatedly removed paint from the canvas. The total abstraction is formed by applying a thick layer of paint and then repeatedly scraping. This work was produced in 1962, also reflects the times of those days and was produced in the style of informel. It expresses ‘Punghwa’ in passionate brush strokes, thick matiere of paint, and an abstract composition which is hard to recognize.

  • 엄태정 (1938 )은 1967년 제 16회 국전에서 철 용접기법으로 제작된 '절규'가 국무총리상을 수상하면서 조각가로서 주목 받기 시작했다. 1960년대 후반과 1970년대 초반에 걸쳐 주도적인 미술 경향으로 자리잡은 기하학적 추상 조각의 수용과 재창조에 집중합니다. 1972년에 제작된 이 작품은 M과 W의 문자로 구성된 사각의 기본적 형태가 수평과 수직으로 단순 명쾌하게 표현한 비교적 이른 시기의 기하학적 작품입니다. 어린 시절 그는 기계를 수리하거나 조립하는데 능숙했던 아버지 밑에서 자연스럽게 금속과 친숙해 질 수 있었고, 이 후에 금속이라는 재료에 매료되어 그 물질성에 대한 끝없는 탐구와 금속을 통한 조형의 가능성에 도전하고 있습니다. Taijung UM (1938-) has started to be recognized as a sculptor by winning the Prime Minister Prize at the 16th Korean National Art Exhibition for ‘Exclamation’ – the metal welding technique was adopted for this sculpture. Taijung UM, who focused on the acceptance and re-creation of geometric abstract sculptures that became a leading art trend in the late 1960s and early 1970s, produced "M W Project" in 1972 with a simple, clear, horizontal and vertical representation of the basic shape of the square composed of M and W characters. This work represents geometrical abstraction among the works that heralded the beginning of abstraction in Korea during the period when sculpture was mainstream. Depending on the location of the viewer, the shape of the sculpture and the color of the sculpture are different. It is an early work in which Taijung UM's view of art is expressed, "The meaning of sculpture depends on time and space, that is, the relationship with the audience looking at it," and it contains the core of Taijung UM's work after exploring the essential properties of the sculpture experienced in three dimensions.

  • ⓒ Whanki Foundation · Whanki Museum all rights reserved 한국 추상미술을 산으로 비유한다면, 그 산 봉우리에 있는 사람 중 한 사람으로 수화(樹話) 김환기(1913-1974)를 뽑을 수 있습니다. 오랜 해외활동을 하면서도 한국적인 정서와 감성을 바탕으로 전면점화와 같은 독창적인 예술세계를 개척하였습니다. 이 작품은 전면점화의 양식으로 제작된 뉴욕시대 말기의 작품입니다. 전체적으로는 붉은 색을 주조색으로 하여 대각선 방향으로 점을 찍고 있으며, 대각선과 대각선이 만나서 만들어 낸 역삼각형 부위를 청색으로 물들이고 있습니다.화면 상단에 청색의 역삼각형이 표현된 점이 주목됩니다. 이전의 전면점화에서는 볼 수 없으며, 1972년부터 나타나는 새로운 형식입니다. 말년에도 끊임없이 새로움을 추구하는 작가의 열정을 볼 수 있습니다. Let’s say there is a mountain called a ‘Korean abstract art’, then you may see a group of people are standing at the summit. And I must say one of them should be Whanki Kim (pen name Suhwa, 1913-1974). He was a pioneer of unique world of art like a ‘all-over dot painting’ based on traditional Korean way of feeling and sensibility even he spent much of time in abroad. This work is also Kim’s ‘all-over dot painting’ style, from the latter New York period. Red dots were painted in diagonal direction. Two differently directed diagonal dotted lines were met and the inverted triangle was made and he colored it blue. The dots in that inverted triangle in blue are new form which could not be found in the all-over dot painting before 1972. We may witness his endless enthusiasm to try newish even in his latter days.

  • 전국광(1945-1990) 작업의 구조적 기조를 이루고 있는 것은 쌓아 올림을 의미하는 '적(積)' 이라는 개념으로 집악할 수 있습니다. 쌓아 올린다는 일종의 역학적 구조가 물체에 무한한 변용을 가능하게 합니다. FRP로 제작된 이 작품은, 그가 평소 즐겨 다루는 돌이나 청동으로 된 휘어진 평판들은 쌓아 올려지거나 겹쳐지면서 그 반복성으로 인해 형성된 내재적인 율동감을 보여 줍니다. 자연적인 현상 혹은 물리적인 힘의 작동으로 보이기도 합니다. 평판들의 표면은 물결치는 듯한 파상(液狀)을 일으키며, 그 파상이 절단된 평면의 가장자리 또한 물결지게 합니다. 작가의 관심은 완만한 곡면을 이루며 펼쳐지는 광야, 야산, 피부에 와 닫는 기류운동과 같이 역동적이고 변화무쌍한 자연에 있었으며, 그가 확인한 자연을 밀도 있게 응축시키려는 데서 이러한 파상 형태의 작품이 완성됩니다. The structural basis of Kookkwang CHUN (1945-1990)’s work can be the concept of ‘Jeok: piling up’, which means stacking up. Stack-up is a kind of mechanical structure that allows infinite variation in an object. This work – FRP-made – shows an inherent sense of rhythm formed by repeatability of curved plates of stone or bronze that he usually uses as they pile up or overlap. It can be seen as a natural phenomenon or an act of physical force. The surfaces of the plates are shaped like waves, and the edges of the plane, where the wave are cut, are also wavy. Chun’s interest was in dynamic and ever-changing nature, such as the smoothly curved plain, hills, and the touch of airflow movements. This wave-shaped work was completed to condense the nature he identified in a dense manner.

  • 최욱경(1940-85)은 1960~70년대 미국에 유학하여 추상표현주의를 학습했으며, 조지아 오키프(Georgia O’keeffe)의 작품과 한국의 자연에서 영감을 받아 날렵한 곡선과 아름답고 강렬한 색채를 사용하는 독자적 색채 추상화를 구축한 것으로 평가받고 있습니다. 미국 유학 시기에 윌렘 드 쿠닝(Willem de Kooning), 마크 로스코(Mark Rothko), 로버트 마더웰(Robert Motherwell) 등 추상표현주의 대가들의 작품을 연구했습니다. 특히 크랜부룩에서는 윌렘 드 쿠닝의 인체드로잉을 집중적으로 학습하여 많은 누드 드로잉 작품을 제작했습니다. 마크 로스코의 색채의 아름다움과 숭고의 미학에 대해서도 존경의 글을 남겼으며, 로버트 마더웰의 작품에 보이는 표현적이고 서예적인 격렬한 터치를 따라하기도 했습니다. 추상 작업으로 일관하던 1960년대 말에는 로버트 라우센버그(Robert Rauschenberg)의 컴바인 페인팅(combine painting: 이차원 또는 삼차원의 물질을 회화에 도입)의 영향을 받아 콜라주 작업을 보여 주기도 했으며 반전(反戰) 메세지를 담은 작품을 시도하기도 했습니다. 이 작품은 최욱경이 미국 유학시기인 1975년 12월에 제작한 작품으로 화면의 좌측 하단부에 싸인이 있습니다. 죽음과 부활에 대한 내용을 표현하고 있어서 전체적으로 무거운 분위기입니다. 강한 흑백 대비와 함께, 최욱경 특유의 힘이 넘치는 강렬한 붓놀림은 아크릴이라는 재료를 만나서, 더욱 열정적인 작품으로 표출됩니다. Wookkyung CHOI(1940-85) studied abstract expressionism in the U.S. in the 1960s and 1970s, and is considered to have formed a unique color abstraction using sleek curves and beautiful and intense colors inspired by Georgia O’keefee’s work and the Korean nature. She studied in the U.S. of the works of distinguished artists in abstract expressionism like Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, and Robert Motherwell. In particular, she focused on the body drawing of Willem de Kooning so produced many of nude drawing when she was in the Cranbrook Academy of Art. She left a message of respect for the beauty of color and the aesthetics of the sublime of Mark Rothko. And also imitated the expressive and calligraphic fierce touches of Robert Motherwell’s work. At the end of the 1960s, when she consistently focused on abstract, she was influenced by Robert Rauschenberg's Combine Painting to show collage and to try the works contain anti-war messages. This work was produced in December 1975 when she was studying in the U.S. and you may find her signature on the lower left side of the frame. The air in this work is overall heavy since it expresses the contents of death and resurrection. Along with strong black-and-white contrast, her signature intense brush strokes met a media called acrylic, which leads to more passionate work of hers.

  • 고암(顧菴) 이응노(1904-1989)는 1904년 충남 홍성에서 태어났습니다. 김규진(金圭鎭)에게 묵화(墨畵)를 배웠고, 조선미술전람회에서 거듭 입선하였습니다. 1958년에 도불(渡佛)하여, 콜라즈(collage)를 제작하는 등 파격적인 변신을 합니다. 1965년 무렵까지 ‘콤포지시옹(Composotion)’, 1970년대에는 ‘문자(서예적)추상', 1981년부터는 우리나라의 민주화 투쟁을 표현한 수묵화 연작에 열중하였습니다. 작가는 한자와 한글 외에도 원시 문자, 고대 언어, 아랍어를 스케치하며 연구하는 등 다양한 언어의 형태에 관심을 가지고 작업을 진행하였습니다. 화면은 단색을 배경으로 각종 문자와 부호, 인물상 등이 서로 얽히고 겹쳐진 흰색의 윤곽선으로 표현되어 있습니다. Ungno LEE (1904-1989) was born in 1904 in Hongsung, North Chungcheong Province. He studied traditional Eastern-style painting under Kyu-jin Kim and his works earned prizes for several times at Joseon Art Exhibitions. He moved to France in 1958 and produced collages and abstract ink paintings. He pursued ‘Composition’ until 1965, and ‘Literary Abstraction (in calligraphy)’ in the 1970s. He worked on a series of ink-and-wash paintings expressing the Korean struggles for democracy from 1981. He was interested in the form of various languages so he did some sketches and experiments of not only Hangeul and Chinese characters but also the primitive characters, ancient languages, and even Arabic. This work is filled with the intertwined and overlapped white contours representing letters, symbols, human figures, on the monochromatic background.

  • 윤형근은 1928년 충북 청주에서 태어났고, 1947년 서울대에 입학하였으나, 시위참여로 인해 제적을 당합니다. 1956년에는 전쟁 중 부역했다는 명목으로 6개월간 형무소에서 복역을 합니다. 1973년, 숙명여고 재직 당시에는 부정입학 비리를 따지다가 형무소에서 1개월간 복역하게 됩니다. 엄청난 인생공부를 한 후, 분노와 독기를 품고, 1973년, 만 45세의 나이에 전역작가로 변신을 하게 됩니다. 울분을 품은 채, 울트라마린(Ultramarine)과, 번트 엄버(Burnt umber)를 물하고 섞은 먹빛으로 캔버스 천에 자연스럽게 스며드는 색면추상과 같은 새로운 그림을 시작합니다. 작가는 화려한 빛깔은 싫어합니다. 그래서, 물감은 블루와 엄버(umber) 2가지 색만 사용하는데, 블루는 하늘이요, 엄버는 땅의 빛깔을 상징합니다. 이 2가지의 서양 유화물감을 바탕으로, 수묵화 기법을 사용함으로써 불교의 선(禪)이나 동양적 무위자연의 정신성을 표현하고자 했습니다. 화면 가운데는 특별히 채색을 하지 않아서 비워져 있습니다. 화면 좌우로만 채색을 하여 색면추상 형태의 색기둥을 2개 만들었습니다. 여백과 색기둥이 차지하는 비율은 마치 화면을 삼등분한 것 같은 모습입니다. 이 시기의 특징이라 할 수 있는 요철(凹凸) 모양의 구조는 표현되어 있지 않습니다. Hyongkeun YUN, born in 1928 in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province, in 1947, was shortly after he entered Seoul National University but expelled for joining the campus-wide protests. In 1956, he was incarcerated for six months in prison due to he worked for the North Korean Army during war. Then in 1973, he was teaching art at Sookmyung Girls’ High School, he criticized the unethical practice of the school granted admission to an unqualified student, he again resulted in another arrest and imprisonment for violating anti-communist law. Only after surviving these harrowing incidents did Yun fully commit himself to making art, in 1973 when he was forty-five years old. He started a new chapter of his paintings after all the hardship. He was not a big fan of a loud colors. So he used only two colors the blue (representing ‘heaven’) and umber (representing ‘earth’). With this two oil color, he used a wide oriental brush to expressing the Zen of Buddhism or the oriental spirit of ‘letting nature be’. The center of the painting is empty because it is intentionally not colored. And he formed two black pillars in abstract colors by painting only left and right sides. The ratio of the void and the pillars in color is seem to be in 1:1:1. However, a bumpy shaped structure (凹凸), which is a major characteristic of this period was not expressed.

  • 이 작품은 농담 변화에 의한 표현기법과 유려하게 흐르는 선묘감이 돋보이는 작품입니다. 핑크색, 하늘색, 주황색들 파스텔 계열의 색채로 표현되어 있어서, 기존에 주로 사용하던 원색계열에서 벗어나 부드럽게 순화되었습니다. 기존에 백빽하게 가득 채워지던 선긋기는 사라졌습니다. 화면의 오른쪽을 중심으로 삼던 구도 또한 왼쪽으로 옮겨졌으며, 자연의 신비로움을 표현하고 있습니다. 산의 능선이 갖는 유려한 곡선, 파란 하늘이 갖는 청량함과 뭉게구름, 석양과 노을, 자유를 찾아 이동하고자 하는 날갯짓에 이르기까지 그 모든 것들은 자연이라는 이름으로 하나가 되었습니다. 그런데, 이러한 산과 하늘을 바라다 보는 듯한 거대한 인물상이 함께 표현되어 있는 듯합니다. 1명 인 듯 2명인 측면의 얼굴모습이 표현되어 있어서 흥미롭습니다. 이런 점은 1972년 작품인, <용녀, 분홍신을 잃어 버리다>와 연상됩니다. This is a work that shows the technique of expression by the change of light and shade and the lines smoothly flowing. Pink, sky blue, and orange are expressed in pastel colors, so it has been softened away from the primary color line. The line drawings that used to be tightly filled the frame are gone. The composition, which used to be centered on the right side of the screen, was also shifted to the left. And she now expresses the mysteries of nature. From the graceful curves of the ridges of the mountains, the clearness of the blue sky to the cumulus, the sunset, and dusk to the flapping of wings to move in search of freedom, all of them became one in the name of nature. By the way, it seems like a huge figure who looks at the mountain and the sky is expressed together. What makes this interesting is that it is hard to certain it is a profile of one person or two. In this regard, this reminds the ‘Maid, lost a pink shoe’ in 1972.

  • 김영주(1920-1995)는 모더니즘 계열의 작가이자 평론가로 활동했으며, 1950년대부터 작고하기까지 '인간'이라는 주제를 일관되게 회화에 표현하고자 했습니다. 그의 작품은 1950년대의 <검은 태양>과 1970년대에 <인간들의 계절>, <신화시대>로 이어지면서 밝은 색채와 선묘가 두드러집니다. 이 작품은 인간과 인간이 처한 상황을 실존적인 모습으로 표현하고 있습니다. 직접적, 사실주의적 방법에 의해서가 아니라, 상징적 도상들과 기호들, 즉흥적인 선묘에 의해서 나타납니다. 거의 무의식적인 격렬한 선들이 화면을 누비며 서로 얽히고 부딪히면서 현대인의 인간 풍속도가 연출됩니다. 화면은 추상적인 색면 공간으로 설정되어 있고, 그 위에 일련의 형상 특히 인간의 형상과 기호 또는 낙서 같은 선묘들로 메워져 있어서, 추상과 구상이 공존합니다. Youngjoo KIM was a modernist artist and also a critic. All time subject of his work was constantly a ‘Human’ from 1950s until his death. Lighter colors and the line drawings are remarkable from ‘Black Sun’ in the 1950s to ‘The Season of Humans’ and ‘The Legendary Age’ in the 1970s. This work expresses the human itself and the situation they face in an existential way. It does not in direct and realistic methods, but by symbolic drawing, signs, and improvising line drawing. Intense lines that almost unconsciously span on the frame, intertwining and colliding with each other, creating a landscape of the modern lifestyle. There is a coexistence of the abstract and the figurative. The background of the painting is set up as abstract colored space, and is filled with a series of shapes, especially human figures, and symbols or lines.

  • 남 관(1911-90)은 경북 청송 출신으로, 4세 때부터 일본에서 성장하였으며, 태평양미술학교를 졸업했습니다. 1954년, 파리에 이주한 후, 동양적 심성의 내면적 시각을 은밀하고 매혹적인 색상으로 표현하여 주목 받았으며, 1960년대 중반부터는 읽을 수 없는 동양적 문자성 혹은 콜라주 형상으로 변화해 갑니다. 나아가서 석기시대 유물 또는 고분 출토의 청동 유물을 연상시키는 조형 형상과 사람의 해골에 연관된 「마스크」 연작이 이어졌습니다. 작가는 한국전쟁 중 죽어가는 사람의 얼굴에서 영원히 지워지지 않는 형상을 발견하였고, 이러한 천태만상의 인간상은 마스크를 통해 표현되었다. 이 마스크는 상형문자와 함께 그의 회화양식의 또 다른 조형양식으로 자리잡게 됩니다. 작가는 마스크를 일종의 한국 탈, 혹은 페르소나(persona)로서, 인간 내면에 비춰진 본질을 파악하고자 합니다. Kwan NAM (1911-1990) was born in Chungsong, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, and moved to Japan when he was 4. He went to Pacific Art School. After he moved to Paris in 1954, he was recognized by expressing the internal perspective of the oriental mind in furtive and attractive colors. And from the middle of the 1960s, he transformed his works to unreadable oriental literacy and collage. Furthermore, the sculpture reminiscent of a Stone Age relic or a bronze artifact excavated from an ancient tomb and a human skeleton related series of ‘Mask’ has been appeared. He discovered certain shapes from a dying person's face would never be gone and he represented those all kinds of forms and figures into his works of Mask. The mask, along with hieroglyphics, became another form of sculpture in his painting style. He tried to grasp the true nature of the human being with a mask as Tal (Korean traditional mask) or a Persona.

  • 정상화(1932- )는 경북 영덕 출신으로, 서울대학교 미술대학에서 수학하였습니다. 1967년 도불(渡)하기 전까지 한국현대미술가 협회'와 '악뛰엘 등 현대 미술의 중심에서 활동하였습니다. 또한, 1970년대 후반부터 단색주의를 표방하여 미니멀한 작품들을 제작하였습니다. 1976년, 비교적 초창기에 제작된 이 작품은, 일정한 그리드(Grid) 조직의 바탕 위에 색층을 조성한 것으로 단순한 구조적 특성이 나타납니다. 떼어지고, 생성되고, 남은 그물망은 작은 단위들의 집적에 의해 이루어지고 있으며, 이러한 질서 속에서 자연스럽게 명상의 세계로 이끌리게 되며, 정신적인 깊이감을 느끼게 됩니다. 화면 속에서 언뜻 언뜻 보이는 색감층과 화면의 균열은 전통 창의 격자형태, 담벽의 벽돌무늬를 연상시키며, 은은한 백색의 색감과 함께 한국적인 미감을 드러냅니다. Sanghwa CHUNG (1932- ), born in Yeongdeok, Gyeongsangbuk-do, studied in the College of Art at Seoul National University. He played an active role as a member of the Korea Association of Modern Artist and Actuel which were the center of contemporary art until he moved to France. From the late 1970s, he adopted monochromatism to produce minimal works. This work shows the simple structural characteristic by the color layer on the basis of a constant grid structure, which appeared in relatively early as 1976. The netting that is detached, created, and leftover is carried out by the aggregation of small units and is naturally drawn into the world of meditation in this order, making one feel the spiritual depth. The visible color layers and cracks on the screen are reminiscent of the grid patterns of traditional windows and brick designs of walls, revealing a delicate white color and a Korean aesthetic.

  • 하종현(1935-)의 <접합> 연작은 1974년 처음 시작되었습니다. 그림의 표면에 물감을 칠한다는 고정관념을 깨고, 회면 뒤에서 백색 혹은 암갈색 계열의 물감을 손으로 밀어 넣어서 앞으로 빠져 나오게 하는 독창적인 기법을 사용하여 한국추상회화의 새로운 장을 열었습니다. 작품 화면에 보이는 단순한 색채는 굵은 마대(麻袋)의 올 사이를 비집고 올라와 형형색색의 독특한 회화적 리듬을 만들어 냅니다. 1974년에서 1979년 사이에 제작된 초기 작품들은 회화 표면이 거칠고 포효하는 듯한 물성이 강조됩니다. 그러나, 1980년부터는 그 표면이 마치 잔잔한 해면(海面)이나 한국의 고담한 옛 건물의 벽을 연상케 합니다. Chonghyun HA (1935-)’s ‘Conjunction’ series started in 1974. Conjunction cast aside the preconceived notion that painting should be done by applying paint on the surface of a picture and by coming up with an original method of painting by pushing pigments from behind the picture broke new ground in abstract painting of Korea. The simple colors shown in the work squeeze through the thick threads to create a unique colorful rhythm. Early works produced between 1974 and 1979 highlight rough and roaring surfaces of paintings. However, since 1980, the surface has been reminiscent of a surface of calm sea or the walls of a country house in Korea.

  • 권영우는 1962년, 국전에 처음 출품한 <무제>를 시작으로, 평생 종이(한지) 작업을 지속하여, '종이 작가' 혹은 '한지 작가'라 불리기도 합니다. 작품명은 '무제'가 대부분인데, 그 이유는 그가 작품에 특별한 의미를 부여하는 것보다, 보이는 그대로를 보는 이에게 전달하고 싶어 했기 때문입니다. 어느 날, 우연히 전통적인 화선지의 매력을 발견한 후, 풍부한 물성을 표현하기 위해 다양한 실험을 합니다. 손가락 끝으로 구멍을 뚫고 그 구멍을 다시 뒷면에서 메우거나, 거칠게 찢곤 했습니다. 때로는, 화선지를 겹치고 마르기 전에 다양한 모양으로 화선지를 밀어 작품을 완성하기도 했습니다. 이런 매체의 실험기(1962-1976)를 거친 후, 1977년부터 80년대까지 표현방식이 더욱 확장됩니다. 이 시기에는 칼이나 끌 등 예리한 도구로 화면을 일정하게 찢어 내는 작업이 등장하여 이전에는 볼 수 없었던 날카로운 면을 선 보입니다. 이 작품은 거칠고 불규칙하게 찢은 상단에서 중단과 하단으로 내려 오면서 균일하고 안정적인 선묘감을 보여 주고 있습니다. 창작에 깊이 몰두하던 파리 생활 초기의 작품으로, 전통적인 화선지의 물성을 통해 현대적인 기하학적 추상미를 표현하고 있습니다. Youngwoo KWON, who entered the Korean art scene by submitting the to the Korean National Art Exhibition in 1962, and is called as “Korean paper (Hanji) artist” since he has been using Korean papers throughout his works. Most of his works are because he wanted rather the audiences to appreciate the artworks for themselves than he intended to it. One day, he accidentally discovered the special beauty of traditional Korean paper and has done much of the experiment to represent the various physical properties of papers. For instance, he made a hole with his fingertip and filled it up from the back, and ripped it up. After this period of the media experiment (1962-1976), his way of expressing has been broadened in various ways from 1977 to the 1980s. You may see in this work, the regular and stable line drawings from the rough and irregularly torn top down to the middle and the bottom. This work is from his early Paris period when he was completely and lively creative. It shows the modern, geometric, and abstract beauty through the physical properties of the traditional Korean paper.

  • 이 작품은 방패연을 연상하게 됩니다. 화면 중앙의 사각형 안에는 손으로 뚫은 원형의 구멍들이 있고, 그 주위로는 방사형으로 뻗어 나가는 다수의 직선들이 예리한 도구로 찢겨져 있습니다. 뜯겨진 화선지 조각들의 변화가 자연적 빛에 의해 화면 밖으로 부각되고 있습니다. 또한, 한지의 도드라져 나온 부분에서 발생하는 음영들이, 화면에 리듬감과 속도감을 불어넣고 있습니다. 찢어진 한지는 일체의 부가적인 표현 없이, 그 자체만으로도 완성된 순수 조형작품을 이루어 냅니다. This work reminds the Bangpai-kite (Korean shield-shaped kite). There are holes made by fingertips in the center of the frame and a number of radial lines ripped by sharp tools. The natural lights are highlighting the changes of the ripped parts to the outside of the frame. And the shades caused by the embossed parts of the paper give the frame alive with rhythm and pace. The ripped Korean paper itself, without any additional effect, became a complete pure formative artwork.

  • 이동엽(1946-2013)은 1970년대 초반부터 백색을 사용하여 화면에 무한의 공간을 만드는 단색화 작가입니다. 그의 대표작으로는 <상황>과 <사이> 연작이 있습니다. <상황>은 갈색으로 컵과 얼음의 테두리만 그려 컵에 담긴 얼음이 녹는 과정을 표현한 단순한 형태의 그림입니다. 이 작품은 <사이> 연작 중 한 작품입니다. <사이>는 <상황>에서 보이는 컵의 형태를 없앤 작품으로, 아련하게 남은 컵의 잔상을 마주하게 됩니다. 동양화에서 쓰는 평필을 사용하여 붓의 한 면은 흰색 물감을, 다른 한 면은 회색 물감을 묻혀 반복적으로 미세하게 칠한 것입니다. 이동엽 작품이 지닌 가장 큰 심미적 의미는 심리적 안정과 이를 통한 치유의 효과입니다. 지극히 평안하고 금욕적인 그의 화면은 보는 이의 마음을 차분히 가라앉혀 주며, 초월적인 명상의 경지를 보여 줍니다. Dongyoub LEE (1946-2013), is a monochrome artist who makes an infinite space on frame by using white color since early 1970s. ‘Situation’ and ‘Interspace’ series are his representative works. ‘Situation’ basically is a very simple painting of the melting process of ice in a glass by drawing only the outlines of the ice and glass in brown. This work is one of the series ‘Interspace’. ‘Interspace’ erases the figure of a cup you may see in ‘Situation’, so you may encounter the afterimage of it. He used a flat brush, using in oriental painting, painted white with one side, and gray with the other side, finely and repeatedly. The most aesthetic meaning of his works is a relief of mind and the healing effect. His peaceful and ascetic work calms the audience and shows a level of the transcendent meditation.

  • 심문섭(1942- )은 서울대학교 조각과를 졸업하였고, 30회가 넘는 개인전을 개최하는 등 한국 조각계에서 활발한 작업활동을 하였습니다. 그의 작품세계는 크게 <관계>, <현전>, <목신>의 연작으로 구분됩니다. 일본 모노하(物)에 다소 경도된 초기의 <관계>(1972-1988) 연작은 물질과 물질과의 만남과 물질의 상황적 확인을 의도하는 것이었습니다. 그러나 1973년경부터 등장하는 <현전(現前)>은 이러한 관계를 통해서가 아니라, 다양한 재료들을 이용하여 물질 자체의 고유한 속성과 구조를 극명하게 드러냄으로써 그것의 존재 양식을 확인하고자 하는 것이었습니다. 1980년대 활발하게 제작되는 <목신>들은 작가의 개입을 최소화하여 나무의 물질성을 부각시키면서도, 관람자로 하여금 인간이 삶 속에서 맺는 관계성, 원초적인 자연을 향한 회귀 본능을 생각하게 합니다. 이 작품은 브론즈와 나무, 서로 다른 두 종류의 재질이 상하로 연결되어 있으면서도, 물질 간의 조화로움을 꾀하고 있습니다. 이러한 작업의 저변에는 예술이라는 인위적인 작업이 물질의 자율성을 그대로 수용하면서, 자연과 인위의 동일성을 유도해야 한다는 작가의 의도가 담겨 있습니다. Moonseup SHIM graduated from the Department of Sculpture at Seoul National University and held more than 30 solo exhibitions, and had actively involved in art scene. His works could roughly be divided into ‘Relation’, ‘The Presentation’, and ‘Wood Deity’. The early series of ‘Relation’(1972-1988), which was somewhat immersed in Japanese mono-ha, was intended for material encounters and situational confirmation of the material. However, ‘The Presentation’, appeared from 1973 intended to confirm the formation of the existence not through the relation but by presenting the unique properties and the structures of the material using various medium. ‘Wood Deity’, actively appeared in the 1980s, tried to have the least participation of the artist and emphasize the properties of wood. Inviting audience to think about the relationship that humans have in life and the primitive nature of return to nature. While the two different types of materials, Bronze and Wood, are connected up and down, this work seeks the harmony of the materials. There is the artist’s intention, at the base of this work, that the artificial work of art should embrace the autonomy of the materials and induce the equality of nature and humanity.

  • '점에서', '선에서'의 양식 이후로 '바람' 씨리즈가 1970년대 후반과 80년대 초반에 처음 등장하였습니다. 기존의 일필일획(一筆一劃)의 힘은 점차 사라지고, 바람의 흐름에 따라 춤추는 듯한 선의 움직임이 증가합니다. 기존의 기계적이고 엄격한 질서에서 조금씩 벗어나기 시작합니다. 이전의 점과 선 시리즈에서 보여 주었던 강력한 붓끝이 ‘바람에서’에서는, 화면 안에서 바람과 함께 리듬을 타고 있는 듯 율동감을 느끼게 해 줍니다. 선(線)이 끊어지고, 어긋나며 방향성을 상실하고 점과 선의 구분이 모호해졌습니다. 이러한 '바람' 씨리즈가 좀 더 단순화 되면서, 1992년부터는 '조응' 씨리즈가 새롭게 전개됩니다. ‘Wind’ series first appeared in the late 1970s to the early 1980s after the ‘From Point’, and ‘From Line’ series. The powerful sense in the existing style of single stroke has gradually disappeared and the lines started to fluttering in the wind. In a tiny step, he stepped out of the mechanical and strict rules. The strokes in ‘From Wind’ is very much rhythmical and make you feel the wind in the frame. Interestingly, that is drawn by the same person who drew the strong and powerful strokes in the ‘From Point’ and ‘From Line’. The Line broke, lost in direction, hardly distinguished the points and lines. In this regard, the ‘Correspondence’ has been started to appear in 1992 by simplifying this ‘Wind’ series.

  • 박석원(1942-)은 홍익대학교 조각과와 동 대학원을 졸업했습니다. 60년대 후반에는 <핸들>연작, 70년대 초반 부터는 <적(積)> 시리즈를 제작하고 있습니다. 재료들은 철이든 돌이든 나무이든 간에 조각가의 손에 의해 일정 크기로 반듯하게 재단됩니다. 재단된 재료들의 전체적인 형태에는 변화가 없으며, 보다 작은 동일한 소단위의 규모로 적분됩니다. 적분된 재료들은 서서히 형태와 공간이 구조화되어 가면서, 새로운 구조물로 변질됩니다. 박석원에 따르면, 적(積)'은 확산이라고 합니다. 무언가를 반복시키거나 무언가를 쌓으면서 개념이라든가 공간을 확산시켜 나간다는 것입니다. 이 작품은 나무의 질감을 그대로 노출시키면서, 전체적으로 상호 의존적인 관계 즉, 구조적 관계의 유지는 미니멀(Minimal) 조각의 특성을 보여주고 있습니다. Sukwon PARK (1942-) graduated from the Department of Sculpture at Hongik University. He produced a series of ‘Handle’ in the late 1960s, and from the early 1970s, he has been working on series of ‘piling up’. All materials, iron, stone, or wood, are cut straight into a certain size by the sculptor. There is no change in the shape of the cut materials but just being stacked on a smaller scale in the same small unit. The stacked materials slowly degenerate into new structures as form and space are structured. According to him, the ‘piling up’ means spreading. The concept or the space is spreading out while repeating or piling up something. This work shows the overall interdependent relationship (i.e., maintaining structural relationship), which is a characteristics of a minimal pieces, while exposing the texture of the wood as it is.

  • 곽인식(1919-1988)의 작품은 크게 3기로 나누어 볼 수 있습니다. 제1기에는 일본으로 건너가 여러 가지 회화적인 실험을 시도하던 때이며, 제2기는 물질을 사용하여 조형적인 탐구에 몰두하던 때입니다. 이후 제3기에서는 화려한 색채를 가진 점들의 집적을 보여 주는 작품들을 제작합니다. 이 작품은 작고하기 3년 전에 제작된 3기의 작품으로, 캔버스 위에 한지를 여러 겹 붙이고 그 위에 수묵으로 형태를 표현하였습니다. 종이 위에 무수한 타원형의 먹점이나 색면을 나열하고 번지게 하는 기법이 사용되었습니다. 마치 쌀을 옆으로 누인듯한 동양화의 미법준(米法皴) 을 현대적으로 변용한 것처럼 보입니다. 검고 은은한 색조는 화면의 분위기를 침착하게 만들면서 보는 이들을 깊은 공간 속으로 빨려 들어가게 합니다. 화면의 농담 변화로 인해 각각의 점들은 마치 공간 속으로 나왔다가 다시 화면 속으로 깊이 들어가는 듯한 움직임을 보여 줍니다. Insik QUAC (1919-1988)’s art world could be divided in three periods – the first period is when he experimented with the painting in Japan; the second period is when he experimented with the materiality in structural way; the third period is when he produced the work with the aggregation of the dots in vivid colors. This work was produced three years before his death which of his third period. He presented the form with the ink-and-wash painting on top of the layers of hanjis on canvas. Numerous oval ink spots or listed the color sides and used the techniques to let them smudge. It seemed like a modern variation of the Mijeomjun(the Oriental method of drawing the tree and forest with small dots shaped as a rice). The dark and soft color tone calm the mood on the canvas, allowing audiences appreciate the deep space in the canvas. Because of the changes in light and shade on the canvas, each dot is likely to be seen as coming deeply in and out to the space.

  • 김창열(1929-)은 1970년대 초반에 캔버스를 재사용하기 위해 뒷면에 물을 뿌려 물감을 제거하던 중 캔버스에 맺혀 반짝이는 물방울을 보고 매료되었다고 합니다. 그 이후로, 김창열은 1970년대 초부터 화면에 물방울을 그리기 시작했으며, 이후 1980년대에는 재질, 그림자, 물방울의 형태 등에 변형을 주며 다양한 방법을 시도하였습니다. 화면에는 물방울 밑에 두터운 직선들이 먼저 표현되었고, 그 위에 물방울들을 화면 전체에 균일하게 표현한 전면 회화(all-over painting) 형태입니다. 물방울을 사실적으로 묘사하여 마치 실제 물방울이 맺혀있는 듯한 착시 효과를 줍니다. 이우환은 이러한 기법이 적용된 물방울 작업에 대해 “오브제인가 싶으면서 동시에 그림 같기도 한 아슬아슬한 관계 속에 절묘함을 가지고 있다.”라고 평가하기도 했습니다. One day in the early 1970s, Tschangyeul KIM (1929-) sprayed water in the back of the canvas to reuse it. And he accidentally saw the glistening and sparkling water drops at the moment, it moved him so much that he started painting water drops since then. In the 1980s, he tried many different methods in a variation of texture, shadow, and the shape of water drops. This work is an all-over painting in which thick straight lines are expressed underneath the water drop and uniform water drops are expressed throughout the canvas. The water drops were extremely realistic, so it gave an optical illusion as if they were literally formed on canvas. Ufan Lee once mentioned about this waterdrop adopted this special technique, "…It has an exquisite balance with it is a painting or an object, and the equivocal relationship in between make his work even more special."

  • 이 작품은 1970년대부터 요즘에 이르기까지 작가가 일관성 있게 꾀하고 있는 제작방법인 뜯어내기와 메우기를 이용한 작업입니다. 이 방식은 71년부터 시작한 백색 모노크롬 회화의 조형적 뼈대를 이루는 것 중의 하나입니다. 캔버스에 징크 물감으로 초벌을 칠한 다음, 그것이 완전히 마를 때를 기다려 캔버스 뒤로 규칙적인 간격으로 가로, 세로접으며 표면에 고루 바둑판 무늬모양의 균열을 생기게 합니다. 그 다음에는, 화면을 수직, 수평, 사선으로 그물처럼 오가는 균열에 의해 만들어진 무수한 네모꼴로부터 하나씩 징크물감을 떼어 냅니다. 그리고 그 자리를 새로운 물감으로 다시 채웁니다. 이러한 몇 번의 과정을 거쳐서 새로운 작품이 태어납니다. 표면의 냉랭함 속에 깃들인 포근함, 네모꼴이 이웃하면서 개체의 친화력을 드러내는 점, 물질로서가 아닌 정서로서 청색이 갖는 회화적 깊이 등에서 독특한 화면해석의 통찰과 세련된 조화를 감상할 수 있습니다. 특히 흰색을 바탕으로 서서히 짙어지는 푸른색 네모들의 입체적인 그라데이션은 윤형근 등 물감의 스며듬을 통해 물질성을 탐구하는 동 시대 모노크롬 화가들의 작업을 연상케 합니다. This work is done using detaching and filling, which is a method of production that the artist consistently tries to produce from the 1970s to the present. This method is one of the formative structure of white monochrome paintings that began in 1971. Paint the canvas with zinc white, and wait until it gets completely dry, then fold it behind the canvas. If you fold it in vertical and horizontal at regular intervals, the cracks occur evenly on the surface. Then, take off the zinc white one by one from the myriad squares created by the cracks that over the canvas like a net. And fill out space with a new color. A few of these processes can create a new work. You can appreciate the unique insight and refined harmony of the screen analysis in terms of the warmth contained in the coldness of the surface, the square-shaped neighbor showing the affinity of the object, and the painting depth of blue as a sentiment, not a substance. Particularly, the three-dimensional gradation of the blue square, which gradually deepened on white color, is reminiscent of the work of monochrome artists of the same period who explore materiality through the permeation of paints such as Hyongkeun YUN.

  • 문 신(1923-95)은 경남 마산 출신으로, 일본미술학교에서 수학하였습니다. 초기에는 화가로 활동하였으며 1950년대에는 회화와 조각을 병행하다 1970년대에 이르러 본격적으로 조각작업에 전념합니다. 작가는, 구체적인 자연 대상물을 추상화하거나, 기하학적인 도형을 반복, 변형시키거나, 상상력에 의한 자유로운 곡선미를 표현하곤 합니다. 좌우균형미(Symmetry)의 대가가 제작한 작품답게, 이 작품은 좌우가 거의 완벽하게 대칭적으로 조형화되었습니다. 때로는 쇠처럼 단단하고 검은 목질(木質)의 아프리카산 흑단나무에 제작하기도 하지만, 이 작품은 청동으로 제작되었습니다. 식물 혹은 어떤 생명의 좌우 균등미를 생명감이 넘치는 신비로운 모습으로 형상화하였습니다. Shin MOON (1923-1995) was born in Masan, Gyeongsangnam-do Province, and studied at Tokyo National Fine Art in Japan. In his early days, he worked as a painter, and in the 1950s he did both painting and sculpting, and from the 1970s he devoted himself to sculpting. Moon often abstracted specific natural objects, repeated or transformed geometric shapes, or expressed the curvature of the liberal imagination. This is almost perfectly symmetrical on left and right, as it is a work of the master in symmetry. Sometimes they are made of hard, dark wood ‘African ebony’, but this work was made of bronze. He embodied a plant or any creature's natural beauty of equivalence into a marvelous form with full of life.

  • 침묵의 사유, <묵고> 연작은 1990년에 처음 등장한 이래로 20년 동안 지속적으로 제작되면 정창섭(1927- 2011)의 작품 세계를 대표하고 있습니다. 닥종이가 여전히 사용되고 있지만 이전 시기의 <닥> 연작에서 느껴지는 일필휘지(一筆揮之)의 호방한 선묘는 자취를 감추었습니다. 대신 1970년대 작품에서 보였던 창문 형태를 연상시키는 수직수평의 질서정연한 그리드 (grid)가 전면을 지배하고 있습니다. 좌우대칭의 엄격한 면의 분할과 구획, 그리고 균일하게 다듬어진 마티에르로 인해 전면적인(all-over) 평면성이 성취되었습니다. 화면 중앙에는 언제나 견고한 사각의 평면이 위치하고 그 주변을 테두리 지우듯이 손으로 닥을 가다듬은 유형이 일반적입니다. 닥의 섬유질은 사각형 주위에서 때로는 솟아오르고 때로는 가라앉으면서 단조로움 속에 풍요로움을 연주하고 있습니다. 작가는 자신의 의지를 완전히 버리고 닥의 자발적인 표정을 기다립니다. 그 결과 거친 표면질감의 물성과 투명한 여백의 공간이 지배적인 화면을 형성하고, 표면에 생기는 종이 주름에 따라 작품 분위기는 다양하게 변화됩니다. ‘Mukgo - A silent thought’ is widely representing Changsup CHUNG (1927-2011)’s life of art since the first appearance in 1990 and steadily produced for the next 20 years. The strong impression from the strokes drawn freely that used to witnessed in the series of ‘Dak’ in the former period cannot be seen anymore. The grid kept in trim can be seen which reminds the form of windows of the 1970s' works. All-over flatness was achieved by the division and compartment of the rigid side of the symmetry, and uniformly trimmed martiere. His usual style is to straighten the Dak by hand, with a solid square plane at the center of the screen and a clear border around it. The fibers of the Dak sometimes rise and sink around the square, playing the richness in the monotony. The artist completely abandons his will and waits for the voluntary movement of the Dak. As a result, the material of rough surface texture and the space of transparent margins form the dominant canvas, and the atmosphere of the work varies depending on the paper wrinkles on the surface.

  • 정창섭(1927-2011)은 충북 청주에서 태어나, 해방 후 한국에서 교육받은 한국 현대 미술의 제1세대 화가입니다. 1953년 제2회 국전에서 특선하며 화단에 등단한 이후, 그의 삶은 앵포르멜에서 시작하여 모노크롬을 거쳐 닥종이를 사용한 <닥>, 〈묵고> 등 한국 고유의 전통적 울림을 내포한 작품들을 통해 독자적인 예술 세계를 모색하고 구축하는 여정이었습니다. 전후의 위기의식이 그림자를 드리우고 있던 1950년대 후반, 그는 당시 신세대 작가들의 도전 정신에 동조하면서 새로운 미술로 떠오른 앵포르멜 회화를 실험하였습니다. 그러던 그에게 일대기적 전환이 이루어진 시기는 1970년대 중반입니다. 평생을 함께 할 동반자로서 한지韓紙 즉 종이를 운명처럼 만나게 된 것입니다. 한국인의 보편적인 민족성과 정신성을 상징하는 재료인 종이를 사용하고 더 나아가 그 원료인 닥을 주재료로 다루기 시작하면서 정창섭만의 독창적인 예술 세계가 구축되었습니다. 사각의 엄격한 면 분할과 재료의 질감이 만들어 내는 조형적 긴장감, 동일한 금욕적인 색채표현, 서구의 조형원리 통한 한국적 추상회화의 성립 등의 측면에서 작가만의 독창적인 작품세계를 완성하였습니다. Changsup CHUNG (1927-2011), born in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province, was one of the first generation artists who educated in Korea after liberation. In 1953, he became an artist by winning a special prize at the 2nd Korean National Art Exhibition. Since then, his life has sought and built an independent art world. It has been started from Informel to monochrome and it moved to Dak-paper(Korean traditional paper) through his artworks that include traditional Korean sentiments, including ‘Dak’ and ‘Mukgo’, which used a medium of Dak-paper. In the late 1950s, when a sense of post-war crisis was casting a shadow, he experimented with an Informel painting that emerged as new art, sympathizing with the challenging spirit of the new generation of artists. Then, in the mid-1970s, he has a turning point in his life. As a companion who will be with him for the rest of his life, he met the Hanji like fate. The unique art world of Changsup CHUNG was built when he began to use paper, a material symbolizing the universal ethnicity and spirit of Koreans, and furthermore, to deal with the raw material of Dak as the main media. The creative and unique world of the artist has been completed in terms of the strict sectioning of the side, the formative tension created by the texture of the material, the expression of the same and abstemious colors, and the formation of the Korean abstract paintings through Western formative principles.

  • 박서보(1931- )는 한국 현대 미술의 모더니즘 형식주의 및 추상 미술 발전에 있어 선구적인 역할을 한 작가입니다. 작가의 작품 세계는 크게 4시기로 나누어 볼 수 있습니다. 먼저 1957년에서 1960년대 중반까지의 <원형질> 연작 시대에는, 전후 한국의 어둡고 격정적인 정서를 담은 앵포르멜(Infornel) 계열의 표현추상회화가 주를 이루었습니다. 다음으로 1960년대 중반에서 1970년대까지의 <유전질 혹은 허상> 시대에는 옵아트 (Optical Art) 혹은 팝아트(Pop Art) 계열의 색채 추상 실험이 나타났습니다. 이 후 1970년대 초부터 현재까지 이어지고 있는 <묘법> 연작은 한지를 반죽해서 질감을 낸 작가 특유의 모노크롬(Monochrome) 회화입니다. 이 작품은 물감이 칠해진 캔버스 위에 젖은 한지를 붙이고 그 위에 굵은 연필심이나 나무 꼬챙이로 사선을 그어 제작된 것입니다. 또한 긁으면서 생겨나는 홈은 바탕칠 된 색을 드러냄으로써 시각적인 즐거움을 줍니다. 이렇듯 반복되는 손 작업으로 얻어지는 연속적 형태는 고도의 조화와 무한의 느낌을 전해줍니다. <묘법> 연작의 후기에 해당하는 이 작품은, 작가가 수행승과 같은 행위를 통해 시공을 초월한 무념무상의 순간을 추구하고자 했던 수행의 산물입니다. Seobo PARK (1931- ) is an artist who played a pioneering role in the development of formalistic modernism and abstract art of Korean contemporary art. His world of artwork can be divided into four periods. First of all, from 1957 to the mid-1960s, the period of ‘Primordialis’ series was dominated by the Informel-ish abstract expression containing the dark and explosive sentiments of postwar Korea. And the period of ‘Hereditarius’ in the 1960s and 1970s, which saw him adopting aspects of Optical art and Pop art while employing his own unique color sense. And the series of ‘Ecriture’ has continued since the 1970s to date, and it is a monochrome painting that is unique to the artist, which is made the texture by kneading hanji (Korean traditional paper). This work was made by drawing a diagonal line with a thick pencil or a wooden skewer on a painted canvas covered-attached with wet hanji. Also, the grooves created by scratching would give visual pleasure by revealing the colors on the base. The continuous form obtained by repeated handwork conveys a high level of harmony and the feeling of infinity. This work was produced in the period of the ‘Late-ecriture’, in which he sought to pursue ‘freedom from all ideas and thought’ moment through acting like a monk and his artwork was a heritage of his self-cultivation.

  • 이 작품은 1980년대 중반 박서보의 후기 <묘법> 연작에 비하여, 색과 선의 직조가 단순화된 표현 양식을 보여 줍니다. 80년대에 비해 색감도 대중적인 파스텔톤으로 좀 더 부드러워 졌습니다. 작가와 한지의 치열한 대결보다는 반복된 드로잉으로 눌린 한지의 결이 작품 표면 깊숙이 자리잡고 있어 깊이감을 한결 더 느낄 수 있게 해 줍니다. 중앙의 색면 부분과 주변의 가지런하고 균일한 직선들의 미감이 돋보입니다. 아래로 일정하게 내려그은 선들은 보는 이의 관점에 따라 빗줄기가 되는가 하면 때로는 망이나 울타리 혹은 밭고랑이 되기도 합니다. 연속된 손의 반복 행위로 만들어진 바탕 위로는 드로잉의 힘으로 밀려나간 한지의 연한 섬유들이 뭉쳐져 얇은 선으로 돌출되어 있습니다. 마치 한 장 한 장 기와를 다독이며 얹어 놓은 듯이 보이는 이 작품에서는 작가의 자기 수련의 산물 위로 겹겹이 형성된 깊이를 느낄 수 있게 해 줍니다. 이는 오랜 시간 반복된 수행의 과정에서 작가 스스로를 나타낼 완벽한 재료의 발견과 수련 방법으로 터득한 조형적 성과라 할 수 있습니다. This work shows a simpler form of color and lines in comparison with Seobo PARK’s later series of ‘Ecriture’ in the mid-1980s. And also the color has become a bit softer with popular pastel tones. Rather than a fierce competition between the artist and Hanji (Korean paper), the texture of Hanji, which is pressed by repeated drawing, is placed deep inside the surface of the work, giving a stunning feeling of the depth. The beauty of the straight, even lines around the center and the colored area stands out. The lines that are drawn down could be raindrops, depending on the audience's point of view, and sometimes nets, fences, or furrows. There are thin lines of the agglomerated soft fibers of Hanji that have been pushed out on the background made of continuous repetition of hand drawing. In this piece of work, you can feel the depth of layers over the products of the artist’s self-discipline just like carefully placing the roof tile one by one. This is a formative achievement learned through the discovery of perfect material and the training method in the course of a long and repeated practice asceticism to represent the artist himself.

  • 하종현 (1935-)은 1970년대 한국 모노크롬(Monochrome)의 대표적인 작가입니다. 모노크롬화는 다색화에 대비하여 단일한 색조를 명도와 채도를 바꾸어서 그린 단색화(單色畵))를 가리키는 말입니다. 굵은 올의 마대와 마대의 뒤쪽에서 밀어낸 검정 유화 물감이 자연스럽게 배어 나와 이루어 내는 독특한 표면은 그의 독창성을 보여 줍니다. 마대(麻袋)에 가하는 행위 속에서 작가는 물질과 동화되어, 화면의 표면 그 자체가 만들어 내는 질감과 그 느낌을 관객에게 전달합니다. 작가의 회화적 몸짓과 기호들은 화면에서 추상표현주의의 역동적 행위를 넘어 무한한 정신적 지평을 표현하고 있습니다. Chonghyun HA (1935-) is one of the representative Korean Monochrome artists in the 1970s. Monochrome refers to monochromatic painting(Danseakhwa) be drawn in a single color with variation in intensity and chroma of the color. It is distinguished from polychromatic paintings. The surface completed with the black pigment came through the thick threads explains his unique creativity. In the act of applying to the hemp clothing woven, the artist assimilates with the material and conveys to the audience the texture and the feeling surface of the painting itself makes. The artist's pictorial gestures and symbols express an infinite spiritual horizon beyond the dynamic act of abstract expressionism on work.

  • 하종현 (1935-)은 한국추상미술을 대표하는 원로작가입니다. 홍익대학교 미술대학 교수로 40여년 간 재임한 교육자이자, 서울시립미술관관장(2001-2006)을 역임한 행정가로서도 활약을 하였습니다. 작가가 1970년대부터 제작하고 있는 <접합> 연작은 '회화란 무엇인가'에 대한 원천적인 문제의식을 담고 있습니다. 작가가 직접 붉은 색 물감을 마대 뒤에서 앞으로 밀어내면서 일어나는 물성(物性)의 다양한 표정들을 신체의 개입으로 제어 또는 확산시킵니다. 이 과정에서 물질과 신체의 접합, 작품과 작가의 융합이 발생하여 무의일체(一 體)를 보여 줍니다. Chonghyun HA (1935-), one of Korea’s representative abstract artists. He is an educator served as a professor at the College of Fine Art, Hongik University for about 40 years and as an administrator headed the Seoul Museum of Art in 2001-2006. ‘Conjunction’ series, has been producing since 1970s, contains the fundamental question, “What is painting?” The artist controls or expands the various expressions of physical properties through the body intervention, when pushing the red pigment from the back to the front. In this process, the connection with the object/material and the body, and the chemical between the work and the artist literally would be the unity of the ego and the outside world.
