TRACE: Residues of the Generative Process

BAE Minjeong

Installation View (1)

Bae Minjeong begins each work by translating emotionally resonant themes drawn from everyday life into prompts for AI image-generation programs. From the resulting images, she identifies unexpected visual elements that evoke unanticipated emotions and reconstructs them through painting. By combining more than fifty AI-generated images into a single composition, her practice reflects distinctly human creativity and modes of thinking. Just as photography was once recognized as a new artistic medium, Bae’s work suggests that AI can likewise serve as a tool for artistic creation, revealing new possibilities for painting at the intersection of technology and art.

The exhibition [TRACE: Residues of the Generative Process] focuses on the ‘residues’ that remain after repeated cycles of generation, deletion, and reconstruction in the process of materializing immaterial sensations.

The works emerge from the subtle gap between AI-generated images—created from the artist’s memories, experiences, and everyday life—and the realities from which they originate, as well as from technical glitches and moments of uncertainty.

These traces, shaped by Bae’s reflections and artistic decisions, invite viewers to experience the wit and playfulness that arise through collaboration between artist and AI while exploring its potential within the ongoing transformation of contemporary art.

「 Painting is no longer the final outcome of an image, but a point of passage where new sensations and meanings are generated once again. By recording the traces that persist and refuse to disappear, I seek to reveal, through painting, the continuing life of images even after the act of translation. 」
