The late Kim Sunhwa(Simhyang, 1961–2019, Daegu, South Korea) experimented with contemporary art by developing a unique approach to abstraction. Utilizing Hanji (traditional Korean paper) embroidery and multilayered techniques, she created dotted structures—“點化 (jeomhwa)”—without defined shapes, forming her own unique abstract visual language. Her representative Starfield series employs various threads on Hanji to connect multiple forms of existence through dots and lines, constructing layered compositions that visualize the accumulation of time and relationality.

For Kim Sunhwa, the Starfield series was a space to express a deep inner longing to explore the essence of existence and communicate with the world. It was also a healing space where diverse beings coexist and harmonize. Through this series, the artist conveyed a philosophical message that went beyond simple visual abstraction, reflecting on the coexistence of diverse beings and the nature of human existence.

The works connect various forms of existence through dots and lines sewn with diverse threads onto Hanji paper, while layering multiple strata to visualize temporality and relationality. The shapes appear free and irregular, encompassing both representational and non-representational aesthetics. Although seemingly simple, the expression is complex and abstract in its form.

The traditional Hanji used in her work, crafted by Master Artisan Shin Hyun-se (a designated National Intangible Cultural Asset), adds a layer of depth and tradition to Kim Sunhwa’s contemporary practice.

In particular, the element of being hidden (隱, eun) by multiple layers is crucial in her work, revealing her distinctive artistic world. It underscores the value of our existence and the way we coexist with one another. Even when obscured and not readily visible, existence remains precious, reflecting a positive acceptance of one’s true self and the determination to overcome personal challenges. By manifesting and shaping her own inner struggles and conflicts, the artist offered solace to others and sought authenticity in art through reflection on her life.

Thus, the late Kim Sunhwa(Simhyang) explored the interplay between light and darkness, revelation and hidden, and time and relationships through her Starfield series, offering a visual inquiry into the essence of being.

The exhibition 《Light within Strata》 features approximately ten works from the Starfield series. Kim’s ontological and philosophical perspective, which visualizes the layered flows and structures—the “strata”—formed by existence (light) over time and through relationships, invites profound reflection on the nature.
