In Korea, the most notable art collections come from private sectors. Ho-Am’s collection became a starting point of the foundation of Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art, and the founder of the Kansong Art Museum started collecting the country’s historically meaningful artworks in order to keep them in Korea during Japanese colonization period. Before museums were built in post-war Korea, private collectors played an important role in the art scene. Also in the western museum history, there are ample examples of museums founded from private collections.
