Introduction
Established in 2020, √K Contemporary is a Tokyo-based gallery that strives to present the art of the future. Guided by its desire for innovation and its experience with traditional art, the gallery organizes and curates solo and group exhibitions by artists from the early 20th century onwards. Manifesting this notion, √K Contemporary's 300㎡ interiors was envisioned as a “gallery from outer space”, where works are exhibited in a way that reveals new values.
By conserving its acts and sharing these experiences with the public, the gallery hopes to place itself within history and pave its way towards the future art scene.
√K Contemporary’s roster ranges from post-war to emerging contemporary artists.
This includes the internationally renowned Mono-ha pioneer, Noriyuki Haraguchi, who inaugurated the gallery’s opening exhibition, and contemporary artist Kiyoshi Hamada who, since encountering leading figures of Japan’s post-war avantgarde, has pursued abstract modes of expression in painting and drawing. The gallery also offers works by post-war artists like Hiroshi Fujimatsu, and Tadashi Sugimata.
Featuring alongside these established names are a diverse array of younger artists: emerging artist, Shiori Horie, whose use of esoteric and traditional Japanese painting materials and striking textures has earned her multiple awards in recent years; New York-based contemporary artist Cornelia Thomsen, who is best known for her colourful and abstract vertical stripe paintings and Manila-based painter Rom Villaseran, known internationally for his technically refined and conceptually diverse paintings that reference organic, scientific and metaphysical motifs.
