Wellside Gallery is pleased to present \u300aEchoes\u300b, a solo exhibition by Chen Lizhu, on view from September 9 to October 14, 2025. This exhibition centers on her recent series, Meditation Space (\u300a\u51a5\u60f3\u7a7a\u95f4\u300b), and introduces new works that explore the expansion of sensory experience through the refined visual language of Eastern painting traditions.<\/p>\n

Building on her homage to Malevich\u2019s Black Square and the classical Chinese literati ideal\u2014\u201cpainting within poetry, poetry within painting\u201d\u2014Chen incorporates poetic rhythm, meditative silence, and musical resonance into her painting. In \u300aEchoes\u300b, she delves even deeper into the interplay between sight and sound, stillness and motion.<\/p>\n

Inspired by the harmonics (\u6cdb\u97f3) of the guqin, an ancient Chinese zither, the artist creates synesthetic rhythms through layered color, vibrating lines, and the tactility of space. Her work offers not only visual impressions but invites the viewer into a space of \u201cpoetic vision that can be heard.\u201d<\/p>\n

In Chen\u2019s paintings, \u201cecho\u201d transcends the notion of sound reverberation. It resonates as the lingering melody of a concert, the aftertaste of literature, the impressions left by an exhibition, the sweet return of tea, the fleeting glance of a loved one, and the emotional reflections of life itself. This exhibition poetically renders the layered responsiveness between vision and memory, sound and feeling.<\/p>\n

\u300aEchoes\u300b is a continuation of Chen\u2019s ongoing exploration of cross-cultural visual language and emotional memory. Her practice reflects a persistent engagement with themes of East\u2013West synthesis and the inward experience of time.<\/p>\n

Born in Fujian Province, China, Chen Lizhu studied oil painting at Shanghai Normal University and later received advanced training in painting at the Frank Mohr Institute of the Hanze Minerva Art Academy in the Netherlands. Though initially trained in realism, she turned toward abstraction during her time in Europe, drawn to its freedom of form and emotional openness.<\/p>\n

She began her career in 2007 with her first solo exhibition at Semto Gallery in Shanghai, and has since exhibited widely at institutions including Hubei Museum of Art, UCCA Beijing, and OCAT Guangdong. In 2013, she participated in a residency at the Park Soo Keun Museum in Korea, where she continues to maintain close ties. Her works are held in public collections including the Park Soo Keun Museum (Korea), Hubei Museum of Art (China), Beijing City Wall Museum, and the Shanghai Yangfang Art Foundation.<\/p>\n

Her work is noted for its lyrical abstraction, tactile surface, and thoughtful engagement with the boundaries between painting and sculpture. \u300aEchoes\u300b marks a delicate evolution in her visual language, offering a contemplative yet resonant experience across the senses.<\/p>\n
