Typically, we first draw a sketch, that is, lines, and then apply color to create an image. HIN, however, fills the canvas ambiguously with color and only adds clear lines at the very end to complete the image. As a result, the work presents a simplicity and flatness that is deliberately intended. This working style has been consistently maintained by the artist as a response to the sensory fatigue in the highly advanced digital age.

The lotus flowers know that they will bloom after winter, Spray, acrylic and ink on canvas, 116.7 x 72.7 cm, 2024

The works presented in this exhibition are from a series the artist has been working on since 2022. They focus on transforming the Ukiyo-e, which flourished during Japan’s Edo period, into contemporary imagery. This series originates from the artist’s deep empathy for the social atmosphere of the time—an era when people sought comfort in leisure and art apart from worries and woes. By reinterpreting Ukiyo-e, the artist has infused timeless themes of life with new, modern landscapes. The artist mentioned being greatly inspired by a line from a Chinese poem: “When you scoop water with your hands, the moon is in your hands; when you play with flowers, their fragrance clings to your clothes.” The poem describes how, when you scoop water, the moon will reflect in your hands, and when you hold flowers, their scent and aftertaste linger on your clothes. The moonlight and the fragrance of flowers are reaching to everyone, yet not everyone notices them.

Summer scents and fantasies flow mindlessly, Spray, acrylic and ink on canvas, 116.7 x 72.7 cm, 2024

The artist explained that we can find comfort and joy in the small moments when we become aware of these things.
