The installation, part of a larger initiative by Shinan County that celebrates the region&#8217;s natural beauty, centers around public art projects that draw attention to reimagining the immediate environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shinan County is Korea\u2019s largest archipelago \u2013 consisting of 1,004 islands. In 2021, the Shinan Tidal Flats \u2013 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">home to more than 2,000 species of flora and fauna <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 were inscribed as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site. To pay homage to the region\u2019s natural abundance, Shinan County created the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shinan Art Island Project<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which will feature a museum or artwork on each island. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\uc228\uacb0\uc758 \uc9c0\uad6c<\/span> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Breathing earth sphere) <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will mark the first work of this cultural arts project.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-46712\" src=\"https:\/\/static-edge.kiaf.org\/web\/2024\/11\/15164805\/1.-Installation-view-of-Olafur-Eliasson-Breathing-earth-sphere-2024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"426\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Installation view of Olafur Eliasson, Breathing earth sphere, 2024<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Docho Island\u2019s distinctive topography \u2013 a landscape sculpted by ancient volcanic activity \u2013 forms the primary inspiration for the artwork<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arriving at the island, visitors are guided along a tree-lined path to an outlook of the surrounding island. A bench and a single Korean Hackberry tree (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Celtis koraiensis<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) invite a moment for contemplation. From here, visitors can follow the path to reach the heart of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\uc228\uacb0\uc758 \uc9c0\uad6c<\/span> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Breathing earth sphere) <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">via an entrance within the hillside.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The artwork takes shape as a large spherical subterranean space intricately lined with lava stone tiles that respond to the volcanic history of the region. Coloured in reds, greens, and cyan, the coloured tiles are arranged to produce the illusion of three-dimensional forms tumbling through space.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere are no corners in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breathing earth sphere<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, no sense of horizon or limit. In fact, there are no walls, ceiling, or floor,\u201d explains Eliasson. \u201cStanding there, you may feel, simply, a sense of presence, here and now, within the sphere. Transitioning from red at the bottom to green at the top, the tiles relate intuitively to the earth, to the soil, and to the greenery of plant life. The polyhedrons conjured around you may bring associations to the crystals in the soil, the tiny nutrients that give life to us all.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-46711\" src=\"https:\/\/static-edge.kiaf.org\/web\/2024\/11\/15164729\/2.-Installation-view-of-Olafur-Eliasson-Breathing-earth-sphere-2024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"638\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Installation view of Olafur Eliasson, Breathing earth sphere, 2024<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his work, Eliasson seamlessly integrates natural phenomena with human sensory experiences by using elemental forces such as light, water, and air. The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shinan Art Island Project <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">resonates with his ongoing exploration of the natural world and particularly with this latest work, which synthesizes the inherent characteristics of Docho Island with his artistic vision.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf we are to ensure the long-term health of the planet, we need to listen to the earth, to plants, trees, other living species, and to the soil that supports us. We can only really do so by upend- ing the assumption of human domination over all other beings on earth and accepting our status as merely \u2018one among many types of life,\u201d Eliasson said of the work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since 1997, Eliasson\u2019s wide-ranging solo shows \u2013 featuring installations, paintings, sculptures, photography, and film \u2013 have appeared in major museums around the globe. He represented Denmark at the 50th Venice Biennale in 2003 and later that year installed <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The weather project, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an enormous artificial sun shrouded by mist, in the Turbine Hall of Tate Modern, London. The work was visited by more than two million people. Eliasson is internationally renowned for his public installations that challenge the way we perceive and co-create our environments including <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York City Waterfalls <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2008), <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your rainbow panorama <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2011), and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ice Watch <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2014-2018). In 2020, the global artwork <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earth Speakr <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">invited kids to speak up for the planet. In 2022, Eliasson opened \u2018<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shadows travelling on the sea of the day<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019, a cluster of large site-specific mirror pavilions that draw attention to the delicate habitat of the Qatari desert outside Doha.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eliasson\u2019s artworks can be found in permanent collections of globally renowned cultural institutions, including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, Tate Modern in London, Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris, and Leeum Museum of Art in Seoul. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2019, Eliasson was named UNDP Goodwill Ambassador for climate action.
