I don\u2019t believe in the creativity of the curator. I don\u2019t think that the exhibition-maker has brilliant idea around which the works of artists must fit. Instead, the process always starts with a conversation, in which I ask the artists what their unrealized projects are, and then the task is to find the means to realize that.<\/p>\n

The current vogue for the idea of curating stems from a feature of modern life that is impossible to ignore : the proliferation and reproduction of ideas, raw data, processed information, images, disciplinary knowledge and material products that we are witnessing today. This is hard to overstate. But though the explosive effects of the Internet have now become very obvious, they are only the leading edge of a larger change that has been occurring for about a hundred years.<\/p>\n

Some theorists argue that curators are now secularized artists in all but name, but I think this goes too far. My belief is that curators follow artists, not the other way around.<\/p>\n

Though the aim of amassing evidence may sound like a rather scientific way to think about collecting, it is necessary to remember that the har distinction between science and art which marks more recent centuries was not evident as late as the sixteenth century. The separation of art and the humanities on the one hand, and science on the other, is a fundamental feature of modern life, but is also constitutes a loss.<\/p>\n

Of all the different relations of the visual arts, I think that the relation to literature has been neglected in recent years. The \u2018bridges\u2019 between art and music, art and fashion, art and architecture, and so on, are stronger than ever, and I have always worked on these relationships. But the whole \u2018bridge\u2019 to literature is missing, and I continue to work on this.<\/p>\n
