Art Soup brings together 21 iconic works from the history of art and corrupts them with legends of popular culture. This collection aims to crash these two worlds to create a humorous and fun space. Most of the paintings included are the world\u2019s most famous paintings, constricting to present one piece from each artist. The idea of a mini-museum of art being constructed creates a whirlwind tour from 15th-century Flanders to 1960s America.<\/p>\n

\u201cSoftly blurring paintings is the core of my practice which is an attempt to convey a dreamlike quality in my work as though the image is being remembered. Exploring this theme of memory is perhaps why I am constantly drawn to famous works by The Old Masters. I hope that by reinterpreting great works of Art, I can learn more about our collective relationship with them and explore my own artistic identity.\u201d<\/p>\n

After studying Film at University in London, Gatenby moved to Florence to learn classical portraiture and was surrounded by the great works of the renaissance. As a result, paintings such as Leonardo Da Vinci\u2019s \u2018Last Supper\u2019 are well ingrained in Gatenby’s psyche, which he feels the compulsion to recreate. A journey is created by following the story of painting as it arcs from pokey renaissance rooms to the colorful worlds of impressionism onto the more conceptual explosion of pop Art. It is a natural part of the evolution of Art for artists to have a dialogue with their predecessors and re-imagine art history.<\/p>\n

As Gatenby grew up with contemporary culture while simultaneously becoming fascinated with traditional Art, it made perfect sense to him to combine these two elements and deconstruct both narratives. In the parody of iconic artworks, a battle of ego occurs, raising interesting questions like who is more famous, Bart Simpson or Leonardo Da Vinci? And who holds more value in the modern world?<\/p>\n
