premier\u202fChromatic,\u202fan exhibition of new paintings by New York artist Caroline Larsen.\u202f\u202fThis is the artist&#8217;s first comprehensive presentation with the gallery and her first solo in Hong Kong.\u202f\u202f<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Chromatic\u202ffeatures lavish flower bouquets and decorated vases, each set within sensational and psychedelic backgrounds.\u202f\u202fIn this series of still-lives, Larsen continues with her signature style of \u201cicing\u201d her canvases by squeezing paint from a bag, and meticulously piping and layering the rich juicy pigments in these elaborate and compositions.\u202f\u202fLarsen further attunes elements of pattern, decoration, and the ornamental, with a keen focus on color and its ability to impart feeling.\u202f As such, Larsen\u2019s intention with the works in\u202fChromatic\u202fis a cohesive presentation that is unpretentious and approachable to all, and that brings the viewer joy upon viewing \u2014 a body of class=\"wp-caption-text\">CL 22.003 Details<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n<p>Larsen\u2019s latticed surfaces create opulent textures that reference textile, craft, and embroidery.\u202f\u202fThe psychedelic and prismatic qualities are exemplified in\u202fQuantum, the only painting in the exhibition absent of landscape or object and comprised of pure pattern.\u202f\u202fLike the houndstooth backgrounds seen in the other paintings of\u202fChromatic,\u202fthe two-color repeated pattern of abstract four-sided shapes are equally trippy as they are evocative of fabrics, something new the artist is exploring in her work.\u202f<\/p>\n<p>Set upon these woven grounds, the vases in Larsen\u2019s work broadly reference the overglaze and decorative techniques that became widely known after 1925 in Longwy, France and have since been characterized as &#8220;Art Deco.&#8221;\u202f\u202fMore specific references may be seen in\u202fShips Ahoy!
