Gallery SP is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Jee Hoon Stark < LUMI KUKE, salt to taste > from April 21 to May 28, 2022. This exhibition is Stark\u2019s solo exhibition held at Gallery SP for the first time in two years since 2020. Visitors will be able to see the artist\u2019s new series, LUMI KUKE.<\/p>\n
Born in Korea, Jee Hoon Stark moved to the United States as a child and majored in architecture at Iowa State University. His paintings are based on architectural sketches and during the artist\u2019s travel to various cities worldwide.<\/p>\n The landscapes that people pass daily are reconstructed into Stark\u2019s childlike pure gaze and an architect\u2019s point of view. On top of the multilayered color background, architectural graphics and artists\u2019 handwritten words grasp the viewers\u2019 eyes.<\/p>\n As an architect and as a painter, Stark began with a curiosity about the concept of \u201ckitchen painting.\u201d the previous series introduced in 2020 was called \u201cToy City.\u201d This series dealt with the larger \u201ccity-scale\u201d and was based on Stark\u2019s unique interpretation of imitating large cities that he traveled onto a canvas. The recent 2022 series, \u201cLUMI KUKE,\u201d means \u201ckitchen\u201d in the Hawaiian language. In terms of \u201chuman scale,\u201d the artists chose the kitchen, the most used room in the house. It is a room with human interactions and is where many of the memories are made.<\/p>\n The artist explored in human scale, whether that is visual, taste, sensory, or spatial form, to convey the \u201ckitchen\u201d subject on a canvas. One of the critical processes was using the artist\u2019s own kitchen space for cooking endeavors. It led to his fascination with mixing ingredients like mixing paints. These metaphorical ingredients and experiences in the kitchen finalized Stark\u2019s process and visual layers for the \u201ckitchen painting\u201d series called \u201cLUMI KUKE.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cMy encouragement is like endlessly updating recipes.
