Gallery Jinsun presents the artistic world of sculptor Oh Chae-hyun at \u201cSamcheong Night\u201d, held on September 4th. The artist has long been captivated by granite\u2014a material known for its solidity and permanence\u2014and continues to create stone sculptures rooted in its unchanging essence.<\/p>\n

Oh Chae-hyun respects the natural form of granite, revealing shapes that organically emerge from within the stone. For this exhibition, the Oh will show sculptures embodying the form of a bird.<\/p>\n

The image of the bird holds deep personal meaning. As a child, he was fascinated by them, chasing them across the fields of Gyeongju. Later, while studying at the Carrara Academy in Italy, the memory of a bird doodled on a construction wall left a lasting impression. In particular, ‘bird’ is the animal that he creates the most after the tiger.\u00a0 For him, its forward-looking nature and boundless curiosity reflect his own artistic identity.<\/p>\n

In his hands, the bird becomes a \u201cstone that flies\u201d\u2014a soaring form that retains the raw beauty of granite. By refraining from overworking the material and preserving its original textures, Oh channels his artistic ideals and enduring creative vision. This exhibition offers a rare glimpse into his decades-long journey\u2014his quiet, determined flight toward the essence of stone.<\/p>\n

Since its opening in 2008, Gallery J.ONE has dedicated the past 17 years to discovering contemporary artists and presenting diverse exhibitions that have expanded the landscape of Korean contemporary art. The inaugural exhibition, <Beyond Order, Structures Within the Void>, is a solo exhibition by artist YOUN Hyung-jae. His work explores the balance and rhythm created by points, lines, planes, and the intervals of emptiness. On his canvases, rhythms flow with a musical fluidity, while unseen tensions resonate quietly, reminding viewers that \u201cemptiness\u201d is not a void but another structure that invites reflection and breath.<\/p>\n

For him, emptiness is not a pause but a place where new relationships emerge. Points and lines become signs that mark rhythm across the surface, leading us to discover stories that lie between the visible and the invisible.<\/p>\n

This exhibition offers a glimpse into the trajectory of his practice\u2014from traces of his early white monochrome paintings to his most recent structural works\u2014while placing emphasis on his new creations that reveal his present artistic vision. His work harmonizes the sensibility of Eastern emptiness with the aesthetics of modern form. In doing so, it resonates deeply with Gallery J.ONE\u2019s philosophy: valuing essence over excess, and contemplation over speed.<\/p>\n

Hakgojae Gallery is pleased to present the group exhibition from the earth, on view from Wednesday, 20 August to Saturday, 13 September 2025. The exhibition features six artists: KIM Whanki (1913\u20131974), SONG Hyun-Sook (1952\u2013), PARK Young-Ha (1954\u2013), LEE Jinyong (1961-) PARK Gwangsoo (1984\u2013), RohwaJeong (1981\u2013), and JI Keun Wook (1985\u2013). Held during the 2025 Kiaf\/Frieze week, when art professionals from around the world gather in Seoul\u2014the exhibition explores how the notion of \u2018earth\u2019 has been expressed and developed within Korean contemporary art, and how such artistic enquiry may find emotional and philosophical resonance across cultural and geographical boundaries.<\/p>\n

The exhibition begins with the ceramics of the Joseon dynasty in Space 1. Buncheong ware, born of earth\u2019s free and fluid gestures in an age of upheaval; white porcelain, embodying the serene fullness of emptiness; and black porcelain, capturing the boundless cosmos and the depths of the human psyche\u2014each recalls the philosophy of earth embedded in Korean traditional art. These legacies extend into modern and contemporary painting. KIM Whanki\u2019s calligraphic abstractions stir a primal sensibility, evoking ancient murals or a child\u2019s scrawl upon the ground, reimagining the memory of soil through the language of abstraction. SONG Hyun-Sook conveys a deep yearning for homeland through objects imbued with the texture and scent of earth, guiding the viewer back to both corporeal and spiritual roots. PARK Young-Ha recreates pigments once used in Aboriginal Australian art to explore the universality, sanctity, materiality, and timelessness of earth across cultures and eras. LEE Jinyong, through his labor-intensive \u2018Typography\u2019 series, constructs mandala-like worlds where particles of memory accumulate and expand, layering the inner landscapes of time and history.<\/p>\n

In Space 2, the exhibition turns to contemporary practices by artists born in the 1980s, reflecting on the plasticity and potential of earth in a present-day context. PARK Gwangsoo presents landscapes where forest and human figures intermingle without boundaries, revealing the seamless continuity of nature. In these composite terrains \u2014where the hierarchies between human and nature dissolves\u2014one might discern a portrait of life itself, rising from the ground. RohwaJeong contemplates what has been excluded or erased by modern thought through their installation and sound work. The repeated and echoing resonances within the empty space harmonise with the installation piece that explore the possibilities of \u201cnothingness\u201d[\u7121] and \u201cemptiness\u201d[\u7a7a], together creating a vast, infinitely empty and expansively unfolding terrestrial landscape. JI Keun Wook captures the cosmic rhythm of infinite expansion and the cyclical nature of creation and dissolution through repetitive line drawing on canvas. These lines, vibrating in a state of potentiality, resonate with the particulate quality of soil. These lines, trembling in a state of becoming, evoke the granular qualities of soil. Through this contemplative practice, the artist opens a nonlinear space where sensation, memory, matter, and time dissolve\u2014inviting thought and imagination beyond temporal and spatial constraints.<\/p>\n

The exhibition follows the breath of soil, which contains within it a vast spiritual realm, and presents a living continuum that binds tradition and contemporaneity, matter and mind, silent memory and awakened perception. At the same time, it seeks to pose a response to the enduring question, \u201cWhat is Koreanness?\u201d and to cultivate a space of philosophical reflection\u2014one that transcends borders and speaks to a shared human condition. Earth is the origin and destination of all life, holding within it the heartbeat of nature\u2019s cycles. It is also our common ground\u2014the foundation of the planet we call home. By returning to the spirit of earth, which embraces all times and spaces, the exhibition aspires to offer a message of peace and coexistence in a world of fracture and uncertainty.<\/p>\n

The image of the bird holds deep personal meaning. As a child, he was fascinated by them, chasing them across the fields of Gyeongju. Later, while studying at the Carrara Academy in Italy, the memory of a bird doodled on a construction wall left a lasting impression. In particular, 'bird' is the animal that he creates the most after the tiger.\u00a0 For him, its forward-looking nature and boundless curiosity reflect his own artistic identity.<\/p>\r\n

Hakgojae Gallery is pleased to present the group exhibition from the earth, on view from Wednesday, 20 August to Saturday, 13 September 2025. The exhibition features six artists: KIM Whanki (1913\u20131974), SONG Hyun-Sook (1952\u2013), PARK Young-Ha (1954\u2013), LEE Jinyong (1961-) PARK Gwangsoo (1984\u2013), RohwaJeong (1981\u2013), and JI Keun Wook (1985\u2013). Held during the 2025 Kiaf\/Frieze week, when art professionals from around the world gather in Seoul\u2014the exhibition explores how the notion of \u2018earth\u2019 has been expressed and developed within Korean contemporary art, and how such artistic enquiry may find emotional and philosophical resonance across cultural and geographical boundaries.<\/p>\r\n

The exhibition begins with the ceramics of the Joseon dynasty in Space 1. Buncheong ware, born of earth\u2019s free and fluid gestures in an age of upheaval; white porcelain, embodying the serene fullness of emptiness; and black porcelain, capturing the boundless cosmos and the depths of the human psyche\u2014each recalls the philosophy of earth embedded in Korean traditional art. These legacies extend into modern and contemporary painting. KIM Whanki\u2019s calligraphic abstractions stir a primal sensibility, evoking ancient murals or a child\u2019s scrawl upon the ground, reimagining the memory of soil through the language of abstraction. SONG Hyun-Sook conveys a deep yearning for homeland through objects imbued with the texture and scent of earth, guiding the viewer back to both corporeal and spiritual roots. PARK Young-Ha recreates pigments once used in Aboriginal Australian art to explore the universality, sanctity, materiality, and timelessness of earth across cultures and eras. LEE Jinyong, through his labor-intensive \u2018Typography\u2019 series, constructs mandala-like worlds where particles of memory accumulate and expand, layering the inner landscapes of time and history.<\/p>\r\n

In Space 2, the exhibition turns to contemporary practices by artists born in the 1980s, reflecting on the plasticity and potential of earth in a present-day context. PARK Gwangsoo presents landscapes where forest and human figures intermingle without boundaries, revealing the seamless continuity of nature. In these composite terrains \u2014where the hierarchies between human and nature dissolves\u2014one might discern a portrait of life itself, rising from the ground. RohwaJeong contemplates what has been excluded or erased by modern thought through their installation and sound work. The repeated and echoing resonances within the empty space harmonise with the installation piece that explore the possibilities of \u201cnothingness\u201d[\u7121] and \u201cemptiness\u201d[\u7a7a], together creating a vast, infinitely empty and expansively unfolding terrestrial landscape. JI Keun Wook captures the cosmic rhythm of infinite expansion and the cyclical nature of creation and dissolution through repetitive line drawing on canvas. These lines, vibrating in a state of potentiality, resonate with the particulate quality of soil. These lines, trembling in a state of becoming, evoke the granular qualities of soil. Through this contemplative practice, the artist opens a nonlinear space where sensation, memory, matter, and time dissolve\u2014inviting thought and imagination beyond temporal and spatial constraints.<\/p>\r\n

The exhibition follows the breath of soil, which contains within it a vast spiritual realm, and presents a living continuum that binds tradition and contemporaneity, matter and mind, silent memory and awakened perception. At the same time, it seeks to pose a response to the enduring question, \u201cWhat is Koreanness?\u201d and to cultivate a space of philosophical reflection\u2014one that transcends borders and speaks to a shared human condition. Earth is the origin and destination of all life, holding within it the heartbeat of nature\u2019s cycles. It is also our common ground\u2014the foundation of the planet we call home.
