Minor Feelings is a panel discussion that introduces the work of artists Chan Sook Choi, Ayoung Kim, and Christine Sun Kim, followed by a panel discussion that will offer new inlets to challenge the present understanding of a hyper-visible, commercially successful South Korea through contemporary art. The globalization of Korean culture in the worlds of cinema, beauty, music, and technology has cemented its status as a key source of soft power in the 21st century. Its transformation into a major cultural force has also expanded critical conversations on artists of Korean heritage whose firsthand encounters with the nation’s expedient rise since the 1990s or whose selves have been defined by its backdrop in culturally hybrid contexts. The panel will explore the ways in which their experiences are articulated through the notion of “diasporic form,” a central premise to Kim and Choi’s upcoming exhibition, Minor Feelings, at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, opening in September 2027. Titled after Cathy Park Hong’s breakout book from 2020 about the dysphoric emotions experienced by Asian Americans, the show will underscore art practices that confront, subvert, and puncture through a flat interpretation of ethnicity or nationality, breaking from previously accepted identity-based conventions.
