Today, biennales function as more than mere international art institutions. They are dynamic platforms where the sharpest contemporary aesthetic and social discourses collide and interact. Centered on Korean biennales and joined by curators active around the world, this session takes an in-depth look at the substantive and theoretical challenges facing curatorial practice in contemporary biennales.
Drawing on field experience from a range of global biennales, this session compares how the geographic and cultural specificities of each region are reflected in exhibitions, reflects on the distinctive position held by Korean biennales, and looks, from multiple angles, at how biennales will evolve and expand within the rapidly shifting global art landscape.
Through the firsthand perspectives of curators at the forefront of the global art world, this will be an occasion to share alternative models for biennales and a vision for where contemporary art is headed.
