본 토크는 안민정, 최윤희, 홍민키 3인의 작가가 각자의 방식으로 예술을 통해 개인의 경험을 이야기하고, 그 경험을 사회라는 거대한 틀 안에 위치시키는 과정을 살펴봅니다. 이번 토크는 세 작가의 작업 세계를 소개하고, ‘한국 미술이 무엇이며 무엇이 될 수 있는가’에 대한 일률적인 관념을 경계하면서도 전혀 다른 표현 방식과 주제를 다루는 작가들이 함께 공존할 수 있음을 보여주는 하나의 생태계를 선보이고자 합니다.
최윤희 작가는 캔버스 위에 추상적 흔적을 남기기 위해 개인의 신체가 어떻게 안무되는지 다루고, 안민정 작가는 개인적이고 감정적인 영역을 차가울 만큼 분석적인 언어로 번역해 내는 작업을 보여줍니다. 홍민키 작가는 그동안 제대로 이야기되지 못한 역사와 경험들을 유쾌하면서도 풍부한 언어를 활용합니다.
이번 토크에서는 예술이 어떻게 사회적 구성 요소를 ‘사회 전체’라는 관념과 연결해주는지, 말로 표현하기 어렵고 불가능한 것들을 전달하는 데 시각 언어가 어떻게 쓰일 수 있는지, 나아가 이 모든 과정이 우리 사회의 과거와 현재, 미래에 대해 무엇을 말해줄 수 있는지 살펴봅니다.

The talk will explore how three Korean artists, each in their own way, use art to tell stories about and locate the experience of individuals within society as a whole. While introducing the varied practices of the three artists, the talk will, on the one hand, resist any uniform ideas about what Korean art is or can be; on the other it will be a showcase for an ecosystem in which artists using radically different means of expression to explore different subject matters and ideas can exist in the same space. In the case of Yoonhee Choi this might involve the way in which the individual body is choreographed to make seemingly abstract marks across a canvas; for Minjoeng An this might involve translating the personal and emotional into coldly analytic language; while for Minki Hong this can take the form of playful and expressive languages deployed to tackle histories and experiences that remain largely untold. Overall, the talk will explore how art allows social parts to connect to the idea of a social whole and how visual language can be deployed to express what is sometimes difficult or impossible to say, and what all of that might tell us about the past, present and future of society at large.
